ROUND-UP Old boards find new life as | hand-crafted church doors Next time you happen to be near St. Johns Presbyterian Church, take a look at the front doors. They are impressive. And well they should be. The doors are hand-crafted from solid white oak. And aside from the moulding, you won't find a nail, anywhere. They were installed earlier this year after Bill Robinson of Port Perry, a woodworker and member of the congre- gation spent about three months making the two doors. Bill says that white oak, which has a beautiful grain is extremely difficult to get these days, and it was by chance that he found the boards in an old barn near Picton, Ontario. Last fall, Bill and Dave Sinclair, who is also a member of the church, made several trips to the Picton area to bring the wood back to Port Perry. They paid $450 for the 750 board feet, which Bill says was a very good price. Early in January, Bill i low km., Lic. Mortice and tenon was used to assemble the doors with the mortice held solid with oak pegs. Several coats of wood preservative and exterior urethane were applied to prevent peeling. The doors are 7 ft. 10 inches high and although Bill is not sure exactly how much they weigh, it took four men to lift them into place. The frames and pieces holding the glass above the doors are made from the same oak boards. And from the same wood, Bill is now in the process of making frames for seven lights which hang in the interior of the church. They will be a fine compli- ment to the pews and ornamental work. inside the church, which are made from white oak. Crafting the doors was a Tory women meet Oshawa, Durham East and labour of love for Bill. Wood- working has been a life long hobby for hime and he now does custom work in his shop in Port Perry. The solid oak doors are an impressive addition to the St. Johns Church on Queen Street in Port Perry and Bill says that with routine care, the doors will last for many, many years. pri J ' Bill Robinson stands in front of the solid oak doors he made for the St. Johns Presbyterian Church.
