They did it again. Re- percussion, that is. Left their audience standing applaud- ing and demanding more. More sparkling, virtuoso, humour-tinged music played on an awesome variety of percussion instruments, or ersatz instruments such as frying pans and spoons. This dazzling, nimble group of musicians from Montreal, collectively known as Repercussion, individ- ually known as Michel Drapeau, Robert Lepine, Aldo Mazza, and Chantal Simard, opened the Town Hall 1873 Concert Series for '82-83 with resounding thumps, bangs, whistles, and gongs. They also clearly delighted the capacity audience. Translating music from Bach to Bartok, Khatchatourian to Drapeau and Mazza, composers in their own right, they proved that an evening of percussion can be entertaining indeed. Programme highlights ranged from the rousing tribal opener Chaka to a wild Spike-Jones-inspired finale titled Rag 'n Roll. Even balloons proved useful there. A fascinating black-light number, choreographed cleverly, as were the other items on the programme, closed the first half. Entitled Chateau de Cartes by Vincent Dionne, it began and ended on a single vibrophone note, with complicated melodies woven counter- point by flashing sticks. String Quartet No. 4: Last Movement, by Bela Bartok, and Toccata in G minor: Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach were other classics of concentration and virtuosity performed flawlessly. An original number, Para Usted, by Aldo Mazza, saw the group going Latin in great style. The stunning black and white costumes, set off with claret cummer- bunds, carried their style even further. A rousing encore com- pleted the evening, which had been enhanced through- out by the antics of clown prince Lepine and inform- ative banter by each of the performers in turn. In addition to standard instruments such as vibro- phones, xylophones, mallet keyboards, glockenspiels, marimbas, and drums, Repercussion tackles virtually anything in its field: crotales, tubular bells, waterphones, gongs, tuned cow bells, foghorns, brass chimes, guira, congas, shekere (a gourd-type instrument, Cuban in origin), Chinese temple bells, even Michel Drapeau's own invention, a metalo- phone bass. Quite a breath- taking, and ear-shaking, array! The three original members of Repercussion, Lepine, Drapeau and Simard, and three others, had met at the Quebec Con- servatory of Music. In 1978, after a regrouping, the three were joined by Aldo Mazza, from McGill. Their inventiveness, musicianship, and lively delivery still show no signs of abating, even with five or six shows and twenty-five hours of rehearsal per week while on tour. When not on tour, the men function independently as composers, studio musicians, recording and concert artists, even percussion professors (Lepine, at Troi-Rivieres University). Their next show is with Orchestra London in London, Ontario, on October 27. There appears to be no limit to the group's ambitions. Future plans include a highly original concert at Roy Thompson Hall with an African master drummer in the spring of '84. A film to be made in Africa on central African drumming is in the offing, and a record, Repercussion, is currently selling well. Originality reaps its rewards. The group themselves were pleased with their Port Perry performance, despite the small stage. Mazza commented that "the audience laughed" at the wry wit instilled in the show, and that it was an "intelligent audience... more © RE-ELECT LAWRENCE MALCOLM For Continued Careful and Capable Management for Regional Councillor of the Local and Regional Business of Scugog Township sensitive". The unusual acoustics in the Hall were also mentioned. Repercussion enjoyed the hospitality and the opport- unity to meet the public at the coffee reception later in the evening. Friends of theirs, a quartet known as Sax Plus, had motored down from Lindsay, where they were performing, to attend the show and reception...a serendipitous surprise for the artists. Lighting and technical direction were in the capable hands of ebullient Pierre Bilodeau, who also acted as group spokesman. Diane Lackie thanked the per- formers and welcomed the '82-'83 Town Hall Series subscribers to their new season. The upcoming show will be the Huggett Family Christmas on December 19. Winner of the Les Parkes watercolour painting, Stephenson's Point, which was drawn for at the reception by Mr. Lepine of Repercussion, was T. McGrath of Oshawa. This painting had been graciously donated by Mr. Parkes to further the Hall's fund- raising activities. Honeydale Women's Institute By Lillian Harper The October meeting of Honeydale Women's Institute was held on Thurs. the 7th at 2 p.m. in the Municipal building. Follow- ing the Ode and Mary Collect, our president, Mrs. Helen MacMaster welcomed all present. The roll call was answered by naming a Canadian industry. The minutes of the previous meeting were read, and a most gratifying finan- cial report given. Several items of business were discussed, including our attendance at the Area Convention at the Royal York Hotel on- Nov. 2nd. After some discussion it was decided to charter a bus, so that any of our members who wished, also members of other institutes in the sur- rounding communities, could avail themselves of this worthwhile opportunity. The bus is to leave Port Perry Plaza at 7:15 a.m., leaving Royal York at 10 p.m. for return trip. Mrs. Edna Wilson is to be our delegate and want her to know that she has our best wishes in this important capacity. The program was in charge of Mrs. Annie Penney and her committee. The motto was "The peace of the world depends a great deal on food for everyone." Mrs. Penney conducted a contest, which was won by Mrs. Mabel Cawker. Mrs. Gladys Slack gave a humorous and thought provoking reading "If T had the Time." A most successful auction of home baking, plants and vegetables followed the program with Mrs. Thelma McCreight acting as auction- eer.
