November 16, 1982 Sports If the Port Perry MoJacks were looking for a spark to get them going again, they may have found it November 9 in the old Bowmanville Arena. Forward Scott Wallace scored with just one second left on the clock to give MoJacks a 5-4 victory over the Eagles, a team which is always tough especially in their home arena. The game looked like it would end in a tie with six seconds left and a faceoff in the MoJack zone. This was a familiar sight Sunday night at the But Wallace with line- mates Jamie Bird and Bob Horton broke quickly away and got the goal to give MoJacks the victory. It was the second marker of the night for Wallace with Dave Alexander, Glen Mec- Kay and Horton rounding out the scoring. . That win obviously gave the team a needed lift as MoJacks came back to the Scugog Arena Sunday night and trampled the pesky Lakefield Chiefs 11-4. The two points gave Mo- fe Scugog Arena as the MoJacks were constantly buzzing around the Lakefield Chiefs net. MoJacks blew the game wide open in the final period for an 11-4 win over Jacks 17 for the year and put them into fourth spot, one ahead of Lakefield and four behind Bowmanville. MoJacks grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first period and were up 6-3 after 40 minutes. They totally dominated the final frame with five goals, outshooting the Chiefs 18-3. Chiefs did not help their own cause in the third as they ran into a lot of silly penalties, including a game misconduct to coach Paul Bedford at 8:18. He got the thumb for protesting a call RRR LL EE TE Wok SY by tossing a couple of water bottles onto the ice. Captain Todd Wilbur, who has been bothered by a wrist injury lately, led the Mo- Jacks scoring with a goal and three assists. Defenseman Gord Rogers found the scoring touch with two goals and an assist. John Fusco and Bob Horton also had a pair of markers, with singles coming from Brian Mikkelsen, Dave Alexander, Scott Wallace and Tim Thompson. The line of Horton, Bi it HE PT the visitors, and it came on the heels of a thrilling 5-4 MoJack victory last week in Bowmanville. The feam was full marks for both wins and seems to be getting back on the right track. Coaches pleased with team efforts Bantams reach tourne First tournament saw Port Perry Bantams against the home team Fenelon Falls and skated to a 6-4 victory. In the first period, Fenelon + Falls got off to a fast start by scoring two quick goals, but before the period ended Port had tied the score with goals from Dave Burnett and Greg Warriner. In the second period, Port completely dominated by scoring three more goals two by Burnett and one by Warriner to take a commanding lead 5-2. Fenelon Falls rebounded for two more goals but Lee Wilbur put the game away with a neat play from Dave Burnett and Jimmy White. Dave Burnett scoring the Port strong in comeback win On November 10, 1982 Port Perry Bantams defeated Stouffville by a score of 5-3. Stouffville opened the scoring in the first period by a 3-0 margin, but Port Perry came right back to score 5 unanswered goals in the second and third period. Scoring for Port was Lee met wed a cw rn -~ - Wilbur with 2 goals, John Harman, Dave Burnett and Craig Menzies each with one. Assists going to Greg Warr- iner, Chris Cookman, Andy Sytsma and Bob Goble. The next home game is Wednesday, November 17 against Oakridges at '8:00 a ne vue" we hat trick and one assist, Greg Warriner with 2 goals and one assist, Lee Wilbur 1 goal, 1 assist, Jimmy White 2 assists, and one assist each to Jeff Cockerton and Craig Menzies. . Second game Port played Peterborough and again came out on top by a 5-3 score. Dave Burnett again the offensive star with 4 goals. In the first period, Jimmy White got Port off to a good start by scoring on an excellent set up by Lee Wilbur. The line of Menzies, Burnett and Warriner went to work with Burnett scoring 4 goals, Warriner 4 assists and Menzies 3 assists, With good back checking by the forwards, the defense core of Jeff Cockerton, Andy Sytsma, Chris Cookman and Bob Goble were able to play excellent hockey through out this tournament. Goal tend- Jng duties were shared: by. . John Moore and Steve Whalen. . The third game found Port up against a strong East Gwillimbury team and went down to defeat 5-1. As Port Perry are considered a '"B" town and East Gwillimbury "A" coach Dave Barkey and Bob Jamieson were very happy with the teams efforts considering - the calibre of "hockey we were up against. Ports only goal was scored by Lee Wilbur set up by Jim White and Dave Culbert. Going into the third period we were down 2-1, however, in the third period, East Gwillimbury tallied two short handed goals and went on to a 5-1 victory. John Moore between the pipes played absolutely flawless. The team played extremely well in this tournament, and should do well in future league games. Congratula- tions Port Perry Bantams. y final evening, and when these three guys turn on the jets on the large Scugog Arena ice surface, they can move and score as well as any trio in the Junior C league. They combined for nice passing plays that led to a couple of goals and very easily could have had three or four more. Forward John Fusco turn- ed in a solid two-way game checking and killing penal- ties as well as turning the red light on with two goals. His first was a fine solo effort in the opening period as he dashed down the right side, cut to the front of the net and timed a shot perfectly to beat Bernard Crowley. -Todd Wilbur also looked like he's getting back to form . and his. goal at 6:11 of the third came as he lugged the puck down the boards, cut to his left in front and tucked home a backhand. Clay Lovering did not have an especially busy night in the nets facing just 28 shots (three in the final period). But he was very sharp early in the game when MoJacks were short-handed. He got a pad on a shot that looked like a sure goal with the score tied 0-0 at the time. He faced 25 of the 28 shots in the first and second periods. - # MolJacks grab two more victories Wallace and Jamie Bird was in high gear most of the Lakefield goals came from Wayne Hill with a pair, singles by Rob Gilders and Lyndon Crawford. MoJacks took 13 minors with the Chiefs called for 17 infractions along with the game misconduct to the coach. The Chiefs play a chippy brand of hockey and there were a few minor skirmishes through the game which threatened at times to boil over. The two teams meet again this Friday in Lake- field: \ Allowing just eight goals in the last two games, the MoJack defense has tighten- up. Against the Chiefs, Engberg, Jobb, Brown, Fisher and Rogers all had steady games with virtually no giveaways in their own end. Charlie Brown was in a truculent mood as he flatten- ed opposing forwards on several occasions with well- timed body checks. MoJacks now have 17 points: on seven wins, three. ties and four losses. In those 14 games, they have scored ° - 102 goals, while giving up 75. __ The team has two import- ant games up-coming this week in Lakefield on Friday night and at home in the - Scugog Arena this Sunday night to play host to the Bewdley Rangers. Pee Wee B's walk over Uxbridge 5-0 On. Friday, Port Perry Stone Realty Pee Wee B team travelled to Uxbridge for the first league meeting ° between the two teams. In two previous exhibition games, Port Perry soundly defeated Uxbridge and once again on Friday night Port came out at the winning end of a 5-0 score. "i i In the first period Kevin Gibson took a pass from Jamie Menzies to open the scoring. Port added another goal--in the second period after sustained pressure around the Uxbridge net. The second = marker was scored by Derek Fitzgerald with assists going to Davis. Watts and Jim Vernon. Port had several good chances especially toward the end of the period but good goaltend- ing combined with some bad bounces kept the score to 2-0 at the end of the second. Inthe third period, Robbie Jamieson scored on a. fine solo effort. A minute later Jamie:Menzies took a pass from Mike. Toye, bulled his way "through 'an - Uxbridge defender and scored Port's fourth goal. Tim Allsopp finished the scoring with an - unassisted goal, ~~: Defensemen Robbie Jamieson and Greg Staple- ton had strong games on the blueline.. The game was a team effort with improved passing. In each game where the boys have played as a team they've come away with a team victory and this was no exception. Well done team!
