November 16, 1982 Uxbridge returns Ballinger and O'Connor with large majorities Uxbridge Township Mayor Bill Ballinger was easily returned to office Monday, November 8 sweeping aside challenger Morley Pitts by 1836 votes. BILL BALLINGER But Uxbridge's incumbent Regional councillor Maustyn McKnight lost by 1383 votes to Gerri Lynn O'Connor, who decided to step up this election from her seat as an Uxbridge ward councillor. £54 GERRI LYNN O'CONNOR Mayor Ballinger's strategy to campaign on his record and long time politi- cal experience obviously paid off as he polled strongly in all areas of the Township against Pitts, who is a chiro- practor with no polictical experience. Ballinger first won the mayor's chair in a by- election in February, 1981 when Gary Herrema was elected chairman of Durham Region council. Ms. O'Connor waged vig- orous campaign to unseat McKnight who has been a quiet but effective member of the Durham council. In other Uxbridge Town- ship races, incumbent Mac Meyers narrowly held onto his Ward 2 seat by just four votes over Cliff Sweet. Ron Johnson turned aside challenger Dave Smith by 141 votes to keep his Ward 3 seat, and Ian Morrison in Ward 5 beat out three other challengers by 230 votes. Don Jackson in Ward 1 and Sandy Ewen in Ward 4 were both returned to office by acclamations. Car rolls into ditch A Thornhill man suffered minor injuries when the car he was driving went out of control and flipped over in the ditch at the intersection of Durham Road 2 and Scugog Concession 13 on November 2. Durham Police say John Greenlaw was southbound about 9:10 A.M. on the Regional Road when he braked to avoid a truck waiting to make a left turn. The car slid sideways on the road and flipped over into the ditch. There was about $2000 damage to the Greenlaw car. The second vehicle, a half ton truck driven by Wasily Machin of Beaverton, was not damaged. There were no charges laid. VOTERS OF SCUGOG WARD Ii for the confidence you have shown in me. | look forward to working on your behalf on Scugog Township council during the next three years. -- JACK COTTRELL This was the scene on Monday, November 8, at the Municipal offices, Port Perry as the election returns were compiled. There was a great deal of interest in this election, with a 42 per cent turnout at the polls. As is obvious by the above photo, there were very few seats available during the evening. Xmas Seal sets $5000 objective The Christmas Seal Cam- paign begins officially in Port Perry next week, ac some ninety volunteers deliver this year's Christmas Seals to town residents, in an effort to top their $5,000 objective. Committee chairman Bill Boagey is confident that the Canvass will again be well received by local residents, who last year contributed $4,453.30 during the week long canvass. The canvass is no longer confined to Port Perry town only, having last year expanded to include Seagrave and this year incorporating Prince Albert also. Christmas Seals have been part of the Canadian Christmas tradition since 1908, and in those early years all money raised was used to fight tuberculosis. For many people even now, Christmas Seals remain firmly identified with TB control. But since the 1960's the Lung Association has steadily expanded its work to cover all forms of lung disease. Christmas Seal dollars now fund research into em- physema, lung cancer, asthma and occupational lung diseases, like asbestosis and silicosis. They provide free local programs such as Fami- ly Asthma Courses, Better Breathing classes for chest patients and Summer Camp for asthmatic children. Christmas Seal dollars give financial assistance for drugs and transportation - they pro- vide children with education on smoking aud adults with help to quit They fund Cold Weather Protection masks which make such a difference to the winter mobility of chronic chest patients, and keep the Lung Function Screening program on the road. So when your Christmas Seal canvasser calls, please remember that Christmas is a time for giving - and suppor- ting the hope that all lung diseases will be ultimately defeated. Correction A photo in last week's edi- tion of the Port Perry Star on page 8 incorrectly identified the Silver Cross Mother at the Legion wreath laying ceremony as Mrs. V. Hayden. The lady in the photo is now Mrs. George Rahm of Green- bank. She re-married last January. Our apologies to Mrs. Rahm, who has been the Silver Cross Mother at Remembrance Day Ceremonies in Port Perry for many years. Friday Nights . . .. Organ Music by Ron Hewat Saturday Nights . .
