It is a hospitable beverage, served at Christ- mastime when family and friends gather to share holiday greetings. Eggnog is basically . a drink of beaten eggs, sugar milk or cream, and flavor- ing. However you combine the ingredients, it is the flavoring that makes the difference. For children, add a scoop of sherbet or ice cream to the custard base. A touch of spirits might be appealing for adults. Instead of the usual brandy, rum, or whiskey, try your favorite liqueuer. As a rule of thumb, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of spirits is right for each quart of eggnog. A non-alcoholic punch can be flavored with peppermint, almond, or rum extract. Serve eggnog chilled from a punchbowl or a pitcher and don't forget the garnish! Sprinkle each serving with nutmeg and add a cinnamon stick or tiny candy cane as a stir stick. Here's one kitchen- tested recipe for Festive Eggnog and for an eggstra- special holiday dessert, try Eggnog Pie. 12 eggs, separated 1 cup sugar cups light cream 2 2 cups rum, rye, or brandy 3 cups whipping cream nutmeg Combine the yolks with the sugar and beat until thick and lemon colored. December 21, 1982 -- 9A Festive Eggnog recipes that Township spends $10,000 in '82 replacing stolen signs Scugog Township is ready to throw the book at anyone caught damaging or stealing 'road and street signs. Vandalism and theft of signs from Township roads has become a very serious problem in Scugog, and coun- cil members last week discussed the idea of offering rewards for anyone with in- formation on who is stealing them or doing the damage. Council members also feel that anyone caught stealing or damaging a road sign should be fully prosecuted. The problem is catching those responsible. Signs usually disappear or are van- dalized late at night in isolated parts of the Township, and municipal work crews have even found that some people will use a hammer and chisel to take a sign off its post. Roads superintendent Ron MacDonald told council last week the Township has spent about $10,000 this year replac- ing stolen or damaged signs. And he said that one weekend last summer, every sign on Scugog Island disappeared. Some were later found. The Township recently in- stalled 68 Concession Road identification signs, and no sooner were they in place when several disappeared. The loss of identification signs in an inconvenience for visitors to Scugog and a cost for replacement to the tax- payers. But more seriously, the loss could present a real problem for emergency vehicles trying to get quickly to a rural location. And the loss of stop signs, yield signs or warning checkerboards could very easily result in traffic deaths. Mr. MacDonald told council that if he had his way anyone found stealing a stop or yield "should be charged with at- tempted murder,' because that's what the result would be. He cited a case several years ago outside Scugog where someone pilfered a stop sign and a car went through the intersection resulting in the deaths of three people.
