December 28, 1982 Sports - MoJacks drop 7-6 decision to Clippers There were no Christmas pleasantries between Port Perry MoJacks and Stouff- ville Clippers at the end of the game December 21 in the Stouffville Arena. MoJacks came up on the short end of a 7-6 score in a game that featured some good goaltending at both ends, a rare penalty shot and a six-player brawl midway through the third period. It was tough loss for the MoJacks who are trying to stay ahead of Little Britain for third spot in league standings and keep within hailing distance of second place Bowmanville. More than 100 minutes in penalties were called in this game including match mis- conducts to Darrin Jobb, Bob Horton and Dave Alexander of the MoJacks, and Jamie Bell, Paul Ellis and Murray Rouse of the Clippers who staged their own private war at 13:27 of the third period. The fighting broke out after Horton was high- sticked in the Clipper zone, then slashed at centre ice. He retaliated ans was being called for a delayed penalty as Stouffville rushed up ice for a goal to tie the score at 6-6. Then the fights began. It took the referee a long time to sort things out and when play resumed the six players were banished to the dressing room and MoJacks were a man short due to the original penalty against Horton. A minute later, Ted Waite beat MoJack goalie Ken Harman for what proved to Swedes to visit on New Year's Day If you're looking for some- thing to do New Year's Day, why not take in the action at the Scugog Arena between the Port Perry Pacers and a visiting Midget age hockey club from Sweden. The games with the Port Perry Pacers should provide entertaining hockey and a _ nice way to welcome the New Year. be the winning marker. Harman was yanked for an extra skater in the final minute, and the MoJacks were victimized on a contro- versial call as the linesmen waived off an icing on the grounds the puck went through the goal crease. The game ended with tempers running high on both sides and MoJacks head coach Gary Elliott fuming about some of the calls against his team. However, the Clippers who have climbed out of the basement of the Junior C loop, put on a pretty gritty performance when the stuck to hockey and got a fine effort from goalie Steve Chip who made some outstanding stops. He was especially strong in the first period as Clippers opened a 3-0 lead by the 12 minute mark. John Fusco finally got the first MoJack goal at 16:29 as he deflected a Derek Edwards slap shot high into the net. Clippers went ahead 4-1 at 4:08 of the second as Rouse took advantage of some sloppy work by the MoJacks in their own zone. A minor skirmish at 9:04 between Scott Dezan and Peter Bauer got them thrown from the game along with Clippers John Mogford and on the subsequent power play, Scott Wallace banged in a rebound after Todd Wilbur had controlled the AWESOME ZX'S OUT FRONT FOR 10 YEARS puck in the Clipper zone. Jamie Bird also picked up an assist. That goal seemed to spark the MoJacks who applied strong pressure but again had trouble clearing the puck from their own zone and Clippers Ted Waite scored to make it 5-2. Four minutes later, Tim Parker got one back for the MoJacks taking passes from Jobb and Alexander, and at 17:58 the Clipper lead was trimmed to 54 as Horton took a quick pass from Bird and clicked on a 15-footer. MoJacks seemed to finally have the very small ice surface figured but in the third period as Glen McKay tied the score at 7:11. Fusco won a face-off cleanly in the Clipper zone and McKay didn't hesitate to drill the puck into the corner of the net. Port Perry took the lead for the first time at 8:24 as Edwards drifted a high screened shot from the blue line, and that goal seemed to give the team momentum. But after Clippers tied the score, the long delay after the fights gave Stouffville a second wind and seemed to take the zip out of the MoJacks. The penalty shot against Port Perry Star ADVERTISING DEADLINE ALL ADVERTISING: Monday 12 Noon the MoJacks occurred at 8:58 of the first for trapping the puck in the crease and Clipper Peter Bauer beat Harman cleanly with a deke to the left. Just a minute earlier, Jobb and Edwards had both been sent to the penalty box for minors on the same play. The loss snapped a four game winning streak for the MoJacks and the Christmas break in the schedule will give the team a chance to get ready for a very important home encounter with second place Bowmanville this Thursday evening (Dec- ember 30) at 8:30. MoJacks pretty well have to come up with a victory in this one if they hope to catch the Eagles who hold second spot by eight points. MoJacks have a couple of games in hand. And this Sunday night, Port Perry hosts the Stouff- ville Clippers with a face-off at 7:30. At the Christmas break in the schedule, MoJacks are in third spot, one point ahead of Little Britain.
