' * WV, ' Painting, sculpture on display at Scugog Library An exhibition of impress- ionistic and abstract paint- ings and sculpture by Port Perry artist Carol Patterson will be on display at the Scugog Public Library from January 8 to 28. Ms. Patterson, a former teaching master of Scar- borough's Centennial College, is largely a self- taught artist, but has studied briefly with American artist Marcia Sears, artist-in- residence at Unity Village, Missouri. she has studied sculpture with May Marx of Toronto. Her work has also been greatly helped by Toronto artist Greg Ruhl, who was for four years a tenant in her Toronto home and strongly influenced by Joseph Spurlock, a prolific and brilliant but as-yet little- known painter and sculptor. As well, she has learned much by collecting the works of Canadian artists through small Ontario art galleries. 'Although much of my work turns out to be abstract, I do not think of myself as an abstract & Ballet THE STUDIO OF DANCE Actra, AEA,RA.D.,D.EA., 1.S.T.D. Included in the exhibition (her fourth public showing in the past three years) are realistic nature studies, impressionistic watercolors and vivid abstract works. One piece of sculpture is included in the display. "The works which spring from my internal resources are what many people would term 'abstract,' she says. Much of the artist's works in the forthcoming show has been produced in series, each series differing sign- ificantly in color and style. Religious symbolism is often woven into many of the pictures. Remembrance Day no longer school holiday A revised school year, announced last week by Education Minister Dr. Bette Stephenson, eliminates November 11th as a school holiday and will require schools to hold Remem- brance services on that day. Dr. Stephenson, in a statement to the Legislature, said that if Remembrance Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Remembrance Day services will be held in the PERFORMING ARTS Director: Inta Leja - Jazz - Tap - Jarzercise - Ballroom Classes held at: For Information Call: Delphine Brown - 985-8662 or 666-1528. schools on the preceding Fri- day. The change was rec- ommended by the Royal Canadian Legion. The school year will con- sist of 194 school days of which there will be a min- imum of 185 instructional days. The March break has been moved ahead a week and will be the same week for all school boards. Easter Monday has also been fixed as a school holiday. Boards will no longer have the option to designate another day as a holiday in lieu of Easter Monday. The Christmas vacation will be two full weeks but school boards will still be able to opt for a Christmas vacation that varies in length from year to year. Up to nine of the 194 school days may be des- ignated as professional ac- tivity days and a number of them must be devoted to curriculum development implementation and review. School boards will be re- quired to evaluate activities undertaken on professional activity days. The changes result from the work of a committee appointel by the Minister to study the School year. The committee met with educa- tors and parents across the province and held public meetings in the major centres. - Dr. Stephenson said that the changes will become effective on September 1, 1983.
