With close to 1000 spec- tators looking on, the Pacers were too strong both in physical size and hockey skills as they defeated the Swedes by a score of 6-1. After spotting Alta a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, the Pacers came back with six unanswered goals as they dominated play and sent a lot of rubber at goalie Anders Jansson who had a pretty good game in the nets for Sweden. Bruno Erlandsson scored the only Alta goal on a nice slap shot from the right point. Pacer goalie Paul Kingston, who shared net duties with Paul Goreski, seemed to be screened on the play. Goal scoring for the Pacers was shared by six players; Brian Stevenson, Jeff Johnstone, Lee Wilbur, Paul Rody, Greg Warriner and Jamie Lee. Dave Kemp had three assists and Vaughn McKee had two assists and a goal post. Defenseman Ray Meisner and diminutive forward Thomas Johansson were selected outstanding players in the game for their re- spective teams. Johansson, who stands about 5 feet 4 inches with his skates on and maybe tips the scales at 100 pounds, was typical of several of the Swedish skaters who gave away height and weight to the bigger and stronger Port Perry players. There was not much heavy hitting in this game, but 13 penalties were called, seven to the Pacers and six to Alta. Following the game, Swedish team co-ordinator Hans Lindberg said the fact there was not a lot of hard hitting made the match more enjoyable for his young players (all are 15 years old) as they are not used to the heavy going and tough body checking. Prior to the match, Elmer Lee of Port Perry, a long time supporter of 'minor hockey in this community had the honour of dropping the puck in a ceremonial face-off between the team captains Jeff Johnstone and Magnus Eriksson. Players presented gifts to each other with the Pacers giving red and white PPMHA caps to the Swedish team. The. PPMHA hosted a banquet in honour of the visitors at the Latcham Centre following the game. For Alta, it was the third game of a six match exhib- ition series in southern Ont- ario. They lost 6-4_to Bow- manville Minor Midgets and 6-0 to Stirling Midgets. They will play games in Mark- ham, Port Hope and Sharon before returning home Jan- uary 8. Bowmanville Minor Hockey is hosting the Alta team on their visit to Canada. Alta, about 15 miles south of Stockholm is considered a suburb of the Swedish cap- ital. Nineteen players, five leaders and two parents made the trip to Canada, and co-ordinator Hans Lindberg said plans for this trip have been several years in the making. The total cost for travel was about $22,000, and Mr. Lindberg said players con- tributed part of the cost and the team had several money raising ventures including the sale of Christmas trees and candles. Alta plays a 35 game schedule in an eight team league and gets in about two hours of practise time each week. All of the games are on open air rinks with artificial ice, and after playing in warm arenas in Ontario, the youngsters will have some re-adjusting to do when they return home. Mr. Lindberg said the team has greatly enjoyed the visit to Canada and the fine hospitality in the com- munities where they have played their games, despite the fact the team has not had too much luck on the ice. Between games, the youngsters from Alta have been taking in some of the tourist attractions Ontario has to offer such as Niagara Falls, the CN Tower, the General Motors plant in Oshawa and the Pickering nuclear power station. On Sunday night, they visited Maple Leaf Gardens to watch Toronto defeat the Detroit Red Wings. Ray Meisner and Thomas Johansson were selected individual stars of the game for their respective teams. Note the difference in size between the two players as the Swedes have several skaters like this in their line-up.
