These predictions are bas- ed on wildlife population trends, on three and four year cycles of rabies outbreaks common to these areas and on a review of recent cases documented by Agriculture Canada. The following areas may be affected: Russell County, Renfrew County, Prince Ed- ward County, the Peter- borough area, the District of Muskoka, northern Simcoe County, northern York " Region, the Bruce Peninsual, the Regions of Hamilton- Wentworth and Haldimand- Norfolk and the counties of G. '"There's no reason for alarm, but residents should remember there is always a possibility of increased rabies," Mr. Pope said. "Not all areas will be affected." Ministry officials advise residents in these areas to take precautions and be wary of domestic and wild animals appearing sick, tame or unusually friendly. Dead animals should not be touch- ed. Also, pet owners are strongly advised to have their pets vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is a major wildlife and domestic animal health problem in Ontario. A total of 1,977 cases were diagnosed between April 1981 and March 1982 - a 38 per cent increase over the the previous year. Rabies, a viral disease that attacks the brain, can be pre- sent in the saliva of animals and is usually transmitted by bites. Foxes and skunks are the main carriers in Ontario but the disease can affect everything from cattle to woodchucks. For people who come into contact with rabies, it is com- forting to know that the treat- ment is much less painful than it used to be. Two years ago, a vaccine was introduc- ed which is administered in five doses in the arm or behind the shoulder. The old method required a series of 14 to 21 needles in the abdomen. People who come into con- tact with infected animals should immediately contact their doctor for advice on whether treatment is recommended. Court date set were laid by Durham Police the day of the shooting. Duncan Spang, 71, the shooting victim was found in his car with a shotgun wound in the stomach. He had driven his car from his home across the street to a neighbouring house. He is still in serious condition in hospital.
