ERM FR SHAE Ib YI Pe 'The only good thing about astrology is knowing the stress is going to end.' Things happen to Com- rie Cleland. Good things mostly, sometimes bordering on the unusual. Like the obese little frog that came into Com- rie's geraniums one day and wound up in the fireplace. She shooed it outside, of course, ignor- ing a friend's dinner sug- gestions. Not that she really objected to having a frog in her living room, even if it was fat and sloppy, but she was vaguely worried about her students' reaction. The classroom, after all, is in her home, a rambling century far- mhouse on the east side of Durham 23, just bare- ly within the Scugog city limits. She shares it with two deaf dogs, a pair of watchdog geese, a fuzzy cat named Su-Purr and her astrology students. By the beginning of Oc- tober, Comrie's astrology classes will have already begun, ina back room she is in the process of converting in- to an official classroom. It's a 10 week course covering the 12 signs of the zodiac (the 10 planets plus the sun and the moon) and the 12 houses of the chart. WHITE BREAD Our Homemade BUY 2 LOAVES ... GET 1 LOAF FREE! They can tell you when you should hold back. Or when you should go for it. They cansay in advance when the best time for romance is, or when you should prepare yourself for the worst. To laymen, chart- reading is all very mysterious, sort of like crystal ball reading or fortune telling. Comrie Cleland, however, is no gypsy. She is not a for- tune teller and she doesn't deal in magic. She takes astrology ex- tremely seriously and calls it a science. Her im- pressive credits include a life membership to the American Federation of Astrologers and she has taught at George Brown College, Humber Col- lege, Sheridan College, York University, the In- stitution for Parap- sychological Studies, Scarborough Psychic Centre, etc., ete. She is also a columnist for the Toronto Star sup- plement Neighbours and has written for a ream of local newspapers and magazines as well. Her Star column invites readers to write and ask questions. Will they do well in business? Will they fall in love? They in- clude their birthdate and other pertinent informa-. tion and Comrie does a chart for them. She 'receives somewhere around 100 letters a week and only answers three in print. Still, "I answer as many as I possibly can." She's been doing the column since April and although it's an enor- mous amount of work, she thoroughly likes it. "It makes me feel very ----ASH WOODSTOVES DURHAM STOVE & CHIMNEY Wood Stoves Fireplace Inserts Complete Line of Chimneys & Accessories Chesterfield Suites Love Seats Sectionals & Mattresses - A Large Selection -- Lav a" McKEEN FURNITURE 524 Simcoe $1. $., Oshawa 7255101 good to help somebody," she says. The people who write her (from all over the country) often read the horoscopes in daily newspapers, as do most people Comrie meets. "Almost everybody 1 meet reads it," she says shaking her head. "I think that the sun sign pop astrology has some meaning only if the per- son has some idea of his or her ascendancy. Most people don't. I mean, if it says every Leo is going to get a love letter, chances are not every Leo is going to get one. "If they did, there would be a lot of love let- ters floating around." Her astrology is in a completely different league than the horoscopes that are so popular. "lI am very much a scientist," she explains. "I'm not sun sign astrology because that categorizes people in 12 categories." When Comrie does a chart for someone, itis a chart like no other. Each person's is as unique as a fingerprint and it's all done mathematically, scientifically, with the help of numbers, degrees and angles. Each section of the chart is called a mansion or a house and . each house represents two hours of time. Basically, relies on the sky for in- formation and a chart is a picture of that sky on paper. Although no two peo- ple's charts can be iden- tical, two people born on the same day can lead astrology - similar lives. Comrie cites the story of a lady who was born on the same day as Jackie Onassis. A former first lady, Jackie Onassis was born into a family which set her up for a life with position and acceptance into high society. The woman who was born on the same day belonged to a family who ran a janitorial service for a school system. Because this woman was connected with the system she managed to rise up and marry a president of a corpora- tion. Onassis had mar- ried the president of a country. Knowing what is going to happen to you in ad- vance, whether you're going to be successful and happy or undergo a period of stress, can be understandably useful. Comrie has her own charts (one for each month) taped on her refrigerator, where she can refer to them day to - day. Knowing you're go- ing to be sad one day isn't going to prevent you from being involved with sadness, but instead of being upset yourself, you can turn that energy in- to something construc- tive. Like helping out a sad person. You're still dealing with the emotion but in a positive rather than a negative way. "No matter what you know about what's going to happen, as a human being, you're still going to feel stress,' she says. "The only good thing about astrology is know- ing the stress is going to end." 176PenySt, SEPTEMBER ... The month when The Hair Shoppe suggests ...
