SA aoe i ie CR Rd Ae ah el aii is by Lillian Harper The first meeting of Honeydale W.I. for the new autumn season was held on Sept. 1st with a very good attendance. Our new president, Mrs. At St. John's RA 5 Bt Rin hte RT ___ Marion Johnston welcomed all present. We were pleased to have Mrs. Helen Thomson as our guest, and hope she will join our group as a member in the near future. It was brought to our attention that Agri-Food Week will be celebrated from Oct. 3 to 10th this year. This special week was first observed in Coffee and tea to This Sunday after church service : St. John's is having a coffee hour (tea, too) so plan to stay and get to know new people as well as Life without triggers "Alternatives to a Trigger-Happy - World" will be discussed in a public presentation by Ernie Regehr, highly respected researcher on world militarism and co-editor of the recent book, Canada and -the Nuclear Arms Race, Thursday Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Peter- borough Public Library, Aylmer Street. chatting with old friends. This has been planned for the last Sunday of each month. We have received many invitations in the past few weeks to attend various functions and this should serve as a reminder to the members who may have forgotten about them as well as members and friends of the church who perhaps were not aware of them. Its purpose is to make Ontarians more aware of the key role in the economy played by our Agriculture and Food Industry. Mrs. Helen Mac- Master and Mrs. Mary Pickard were named as our representatives to the workshop held in Greenwood during Agri- Food Week. The program was most interesting, having been arranged by our "Tweedsmuir History" convenor, Mrs. Margaret - Cornish. It dealt with history of our local hospital from the earliest one to our pre- sent modern hospital. Several members related interesting anec- dotes concerning the earlier hospitals, and all agreed that we are very fortunate to have such a - fine hospital as we have in our community. Mrs. Marjorie McComb gave a very worthwhile paper on "treasures from the past" and how family heirlooms can keep us mindful of our ancestors. Following the singing of "O Canada" we en- joyed a lovely lunch and social half-hour. Call the Star for Information: PHONE 985-7383 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1983 -- 35 HWI holds first meeting International figure to address local church Doctor Robert B, McClure, M.D. F.R.CS, F.I.CS,, D.D,, L.L.D., Mission- ary Doctor, former Moderator of the United Church of Canada, intensely active oct- ogenarian, will be the guest speaker on Sun- day, September 25th, when Prince Albert United Church cele- brates its 117th Anniver- sary. For many decades in this country (and in China, India, Peru and in many other parts of this planet that he calls home) the name of Robert McClure has been synonymous with selfless service and un- comprising dedication to the needs of his fellow human beings. Born of missionary parents en route home from China in 1900, while still an infant he returned with his family to that land, where he spent his formative years, during the time of the Manchu dynasty and the early repulbic. Coming to Canada with his father at age 15, he completed medical and surgical studies in Toronto and returned to Hwaiking, China, in 1923 as a missionary doctor. Through the political troubled 20's and 30's, the war years, and until the success of the Communist Revolution in 1949, the story of medical service in China was dotted with the indefatigable and inventive fingerprints of . Bob McClure. 'With Xray, radium, bicycle spokes, and the 'loop' scalpel, and wrench he pioneered, adapted, improvised, taught and practiced." (Munroe Scott: McClure, The China Years, p, 406). When the missionar- -ies were expelled from China by the Commun- ist government in 1949, McClure found himself returning to Canada to seek a new field of service. Before long he discovered that, and spent the 50's and 60's in medical pioneering work in India. Such was the imprint that he has had upon his Church that in 1968 the 23rd General Council of the United Church elect- ed him as the first (and to this date the only) non-ordained person to serve as Moderator--the highest office in the Church. Since that time, at an age when many look for ease and com- fort, the 'retired' Bob McClure has continued to serve, having spark- ed the development of a much needed medical service in rural Peru when he was well into _ his seventies. One of his chief avocations at this time is the offering of the challenge to senior citizens to do voluntary service work in the two-thirds world. Bob McClure is truly "international man". It is our privilege to have him visit our comm- unity and to bring his UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA Port Perry and Prince Albert Rev. Glenn Jackson M.A.B.D.
