14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1983 Solar greenhouse in Ashburn House that. Mary built Mary Mitropoulos is building a greenhouse and she'd like you to help. Actually, if you've ever nurtured an interest in having your own backyard oasis, warm when it's cold outside with fresh vege- tables in February, this is your opportunity to learn more about the solar greenhouse. Toronto's Ecology House, an offshoot of Pollution Probe, has organized a on-profit weekend workshop for Durham residents on the subject. It's a two- day affair, much like an old-fashioned barn-rais- ing, in which people gain the confidence and hands-on experience needed to build their own greenhouses. Participants will be introduced to the prin- ciples of solar design and the construction specifics for the parti- ular greenhouse they will be building (Mary's) on October 1st and 2nd, a weekend. The workshop fee of $35 includes a Friday evening seminar on September 30 at Whitby's main public library. Mary is very excited about the whole thing. She's been an ecologist and an environmentalist for all her life and a greenhouse encompass- es everything she believes in. She's been thinking of it, planning for it and saving for it for years and can hardly believe it will be built this weekend. i : 3. pd Mary Mitropoulos can rest with a cup ot tea now, but pretty soon she'll be busy put- ting up her dream, an energy saving greenhouse. See story for details. "A greenhouse is such a nice place to sit with the sunshine streaming through, drinking tea in the middle of winter," she says. Another benefit is eat- ing fresh veggies all winter long (Mary's favourite is red pepper) with no chemicals add- ed, loaded with vitamins and nutrition. The whole purpose of a greenhouse is collect- ing and retaining heat from the sun, and stor- ing it so it can be used when the day ends and the cold night begins. The project will have cost Mary between five and six grand before it's finished but she's gett- ing off cheaply because Ecology House is lend- ing a hand. For anyone in an area where green- houses aren't common (Mary lives in Ash- burn), Ecology House will build as long as the owner can gather at least 10 people together for a weekend work- shop. For more information call Ecology House at 967-0577 or Mary at 655-4035.
