October 4, 1983 -- 21 Pee Wee MoJacks win York-Durham title Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens Pee Wee Softball team capped an excellent season by winning the York-Dur- ham Pee Wee Softball League Championship. The MoJacks had earlier in the year won Day Weekend they cap- tured the Silver Medal at the Ontario Summer Games. The Port Perry Club after defeating Good- wood in the semi-finals in two straight games went to Bradford for the first game of the best of three series and came home with a loss as two tournaments in Sharron and Fenelon Falls and on the Labour Bradford defeated the MoJacks 4-3. Bradford grabbed an early 4-0 lead and held on for the upset win. Brad Menzies had a single for Port Perry, scored a run and drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly. Dave Burnett and Steve Durham each had a hit long triple. Game two of the series was played at the lake front park in Port Perry and it was a 'must win" situation for the local team. This game was one of the best played this year in Port Perry and the MoJacks came through with a 4-3 win to tie up The Port 'Perry MoJacks Pee Wee Fastball team captured the York-Durham League championship recently with vic- tories over Bradford. This capped an ex- cellent season for this team which finished with silver medalts at the Summer Games in Sudbury. The MoJacks opened the scoring in the first inning as Dave Burnett hit a triple with two out, and was followed by singles from the bats of Steve Durham and Brad Menzies to produce a two run lead. Bradford was not to be held down as they came back in the top of the second inning to score 3 runs and take a 3-2 lead. Port Perry came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 3-3 on a single by John Lally, a stolen base and a single by Jamie Mahoney. The two teams then battled through five more scoreless innings until the bottom of the eighth (an extra inning) when Craig Venning led off the inning with a single to left field and moved to second base when the fielder made an error. John Lally then was safe on a fielders choice and Dave Culbert walked to load the bases and set the stage for a dramatic ending, a Dave Burnett drove the second pitch to left field for the game winning hit and run. On Thursday night the two teams again return- ed to the Port Perry diamond to decide the league Championship and another fine game was played for the home fans. In this game the MoJacks proved the fine softball they could play as they dropped behind Bradford 1-0 in the second inning, but after a walk to John Lally and a single by Jamie Mahoney, David Culbert scored them both with a single for a 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning Steve Durham and Blair Bailey both had singles and then a sharp double to left field by Craig Venning made the score 4-1. In the fifth a double by Steve Durham a single by Bobby Orr and a triple by Blair Bailey made the final score 8-1 for the Mojacks. Dave Burnett was the winning pitcher but had strong defensive play by his teammates who had only one error in the last fifteen innings in the series. Coaches Garnett Warriner and Wayne Venning and Manager Ted Culbert were extremely proud of all the players on the team as they all con- tributed to the successes of the 1983 season.
