AA) WRAL) Sd DONORS DARL Gc i REAR DCE SURES WEA SR Lt N FAR CRIP AY RET OS LAN 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. October 12, 1983 Kinsmen host first service club reunion with Harvey Webster A former Port Perry boy, Harvey Webster, was the guest speaker at the first annual Service Club Reunion hosted by the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry last Thursday evening, and when he finished speaking the crowd showed their ap- preciation with a stan- ding ovation. The reunion, or gather- ing of local service clubs was the idea of Tom Armstrong of the Port Perry Kinsmen Club. Over the past few months Kin Tom and and other members of the club prepared for the evening and sent out in- vitations to the Lions Club of Port Perry and Blackstock, the Royal Canadian Legion, Scugog Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and the K-40 Club. About 60 men and women met at the Lat- cham Centre, and prior to dinner re-acquainted themselves with each other. All seemed to feel it was a good idea to get members of the different service groups together, as they were all working towards the betterment of the community. In his address to the group, Mr. Webster stressed how many Port Perry men and women had helped him through his youth and how they were responsible for what he is today. He credited people like Roy Cornish, Grant Mac- Donald, Dr. Matt Dy- mond, the Wanamakers and the Clemens with moulding his early years and helping him through his growth and education. For the past 25 years, Mr. Webster has been a teacher and in his spare time has spent much- time coaching communi- ty teams and performing service club work. "We as adults can make a major contribution to a childs life as a volunteer. What greater gift can we give our nation than to build the character of our youth." As a teacher, Mr. Webster said he has found there are two dif- ferent types of parents. 'First, there is the Schnook-type parent: These people who never force a child to do anything he doesn't feel like doing. They never raise their voice at them; Tell them their rights, but never mention their responsibilities; Make sure they don't know - four-letter-words like- Duty, Home, Help, Care, Earn, Save, Give, Work as ' TF Seven service clubs were represented last Thursday evening at the Latcham Cen- tre for the first annual Service Club Reunion. Representing the clubs are: back left; Rick Bouillon (K-40 Club); Don Cliff (Blackstock Lions); Dr. Jim Hardy (Scugog Chamber of Commerce); Bob Hudson (Kinsmen Club of Port Perry); and Love; and they never mention the word "gratitude." Following the above rules, Mr. Webster says you'll qualify as a good Schnook parent and raise yourself a rotten kid. On the other hand, Mr. Webster says that a good parent is one that pro- vides a good home with love; high moral stan- dards, good parental ex- ample, decent food, clothing and shelter, spiritual guidance, discipline, common ac- tivities, respect for authority and a place to bring friends. "In our role as service club members we are in the position to make a meaningful contribution Ken Murray (Port Perry to the lives of others. We are all needed and it is important to involve peo- ple as it strengthens a community and gives us a sense of purpose." In conclusion, Mr. Webster suggested that each person present pro- bably knows people that have effected their lives, and that now it was our turn to reach out and contribute to the lives of others. It is hoped by the Kinsmen Club that now the Service Club Reunion has been started, that another club will pick-up the momentum started this year and continue the event again next year. ROBERT J. OSHAWA "When Bernie Schaefer entered the Ministry of Transportation office in Ajax last week to change the ownership on his car he was rather shocked to learn that he was not the only one with licence plate issued with the numbers TNO 241. Coincidentally Tim Dyck of Oshawa also was driving around in his Buick with the same licence number. Officials at the vehicle licensing office in Oshawa are not sure how the duplicate plates could have been issued, but suspect that the computer was down when Schaefer was issued his plates just three weeks after Dyck picked up his.
