Did you try that ridiculous Diet Banana Muffin Recipe in this space last week? Did you follow the directions exactly? Did you have your stomach pumped the same day? Gross, gross, gross. Now I know why they're call- ed diet muffins, 'cause if you're limited to eating these things, you'll opt for fasting instead. Oh, the recipe is basically okay. I just neglected to copy down how much flour to stick in the batter. In fact, the flour was forgotten completely. A doctor was the first to call. Seems his wife made the mush muffins and wasn't thrilled with the gooey results. "What's the baking powder supposed to act on, eh, if there's no flour?" Whaaat? "You forgot the flour!" Then the Mystery Lady called. She wouldn't leave her name, but she did leave the receptionist with an ear full of complaints about mushy puddles in the bottom of her muffin tins. Gee, what can I say? I didn't mean to poison the nation. When I tried the muffins at the TOPS meeting I attended, they tasted great. So if you try this recipe, add some flour. Maybe a cup. Maybe two. Use your best judgement because I don't know for sure how much of the white stuff is needed. Well, I gained weight this week. Please don't strike me with any thunder bolts. It was only one een- sy, teensy pound. Maybe a pound and a half tops. And yes, I feel bad about it, especially putting the number at the top of this column. But I'm not surprised. I really did eat badly this week, there's no denying it, even to myself. I know exactly where I went wrong, and I plan to do something about it. For many people, getting back on the diet track is harder, much harder (how hard? Pretty hard) than actually starting the diet in the first place. Motiva- tion is the key here and I must admit I've been runn- ing on empty of the stuff lately. How to get back to losing? Recently, I read about a trick that is commonly referred to as spring- cleaning for the body. It's a juice fast and is almost guaranteed to obliterate all those lumpy, lethargic, thick-through-the-middle feelings. The idea is to revitalize yourself and create new interest in the task at hand. The day before, eat lightly. Have fruit for breakfast and a salad for lunch and dinner, perhaps with a little cottage cheese or yogurt. This helps prepare your body for the fast. If you want to get Week six: 14 (boo) Ibs.! fanatical about things, take a MILD laxative the night before (like a glass of prune juice). First thing in the morning, drink a tisane, a cup of herb or flower tea, such as peppermint, camomile, rose-hip, or solidago (goldenrod, particularly good for eliminating excess water from the tissues if you tend to retain it). At breakfast, prepare two large glasses of diluted fresh fruit juice -- such as orange, grapefruit, apple, pear or grape -- each half juice and half spring water. Sip slowly until you've drunk both glasses. To do this properly, you need a juice extractor (sometimes called a centrifuge), an excellent invest- ment for long-lasting health and beauty in general (so I'm told). Raw juices are rich in vitamins, minerals, and trace elements that are useful in restoring tissue. At mid-morning break, try another glass of diluted fresh fruit juice if desired or a tisane. At lunch, drink two large glasses of half fresh vegetable juice -- such as carrot, celery, tomato, cucumber, or a mixture of these -- and half spring water. In mid-afternoon, drink another glass of freshly made fruit or vegetable juice, undiluted. For dinner, a glass of freshly made fruit or vegetable juice will do, undiluted. Before bed, if you're hungry, pop a few raisins (only a few!), chewed slowly, and another tisane, or glass of spring water if your prefer. Altogether, throughout the day you should drink between one-and-a-half and three pints of juice, depending on how much you eat. It is best for half of the juices to be vegetable and half to be fruit, since the fruits are the natural cleansers of the system and the vegetables are the revitalizers. As with a true fast, if you experience any feeling of discomfort, such as headache, tuck yourself away in a dark room and drink only herb tea or water until it passes. If you take a lukewarm bath (not hot) in the evening, it will help you sleep well. Although I've been told it's okay to stay on this fast for up to three to five days, I don't recommend it. Try it for a day and see how your body reacts. Don't forget to take vitamins, no matter what diet you're on. I'm a true believer in vitamins and pop 1000 mg, of C, a B complex pill and an iron capsule every day. I also sip an ounce or two of Aloe Vera juice each day, just to keep things healthy, and double it when a cold or flu threatens. But just because I need iron or Vitamin B, doesn't mean you do. Check with your doctor, get a complete physical every once in awhile, and make sure what you're doing is safe. - And don't eat those banana muffins without flour.
