October 18, 1983 -- 3 Three youths jailed for murder (From page 1) sideration the young ages of the three men, the fact that they had no previous records of violent crime, and their chance of rehabilitation after they have paid their debt to society. Assistant Crown Attorney Ed Bradley had asked that slightly stiffer sentences be imposed on the three men. Reading evidence into the record, Mr. Bradley related to the court the chain of events last December 11-12 which led to the robbery and subsequent shooting of Mr. Spang. He said plans for the burglary were made as the three men were drinking in Oshawa. Well after midnight, they drove to the house of a friend of Perrault on Scugog Island where the latter got his shot- gun and shells. They then drove to Claremont, found the Spang house and parked the car about a quarter mile away in some trees. They cut across a field, first checked out the barn, and then pried open a kitchen door to enter the house. Perrault had loaded the shotgun with four shells, and the Kennedy brothers carried a base- ball bat and crowbar. Once inside, they began over-turning and smashing furniture in their search for what they believed was a substantial sum of money. They were in an upstairs room when Mr. Spang returned to the house for breakfast after doing morning chores on his second farm. The three men came down the stairs and saw Mr. Spang standing in 'the kitchen. Three shots were fired into a wall, door and ceiling while the fourth shot hit the victim in the stomach from a distance of six to 12 feet, the court was told. PETER HVIDSTEN DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 30, 1983 to their car, Mr. Spang managed to drag him- self to his own car and drive to a neighbouring farm where police were called. The three drove east along Highway 7 and were apprehended a short while later by two Durham Region Police detectives who were driving west on the highway en route to the Spang farm. The police had' been notified that three men were belie- ved involved in the shooting, and they gave chase when they noticed three men in the passing car. The three gave up without a struggle and police found the re-load- Reject ski hill plan (From page 1) from snow, and tres- passing skiers. Although council turn- ed down the Schnegg's application for re- zoning, the couple can fight the ruling at an OMB hearing if they decide they want to. "I don't know what we're going to do," Mrs. Schnegg said. "He hasn't really made up his mind yet. Maybe we'll put out an appeal to see what kind of response we'd get, to see if we'd have a future with a ski hill or whether we've just had some pipe dream in our heads." She says if the comm- unity is overwhelmingly in favour of a ski hill, Mrs. Schnegg and her husband might re- consider their plans. Crown Attorney Brad- Development in Brooklin stopped The hamlet of Brooklin, just south of Port Perry, will remain a community of about 1600 after plans to develop the area to a community of about 10,000 were scuttled last week. Regional Chairman Gary Herrema report- ed last Friday that the long-planned Brooklin development will not proceed. "We tried to get a good deal for Brooklin but the developer let us down," he said. Regional council backed the project in the late 70's, accepting a $2.1. million letter of credit to be used to upgrade Brooklin services if development did go ahead. The Brooklin developers were to spend an estimated $8 million to extend sewers to the community. Herrema commented that "long-term plans for Brooklin will now have to be totally re-evaluated." A letter is expected soon from the Tamay Realty Co. stating that the project will not be going ahead. supposed to move and | got scared."
