8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. October 18, 1983 Scugog Island resident got TV off and running It was 1952 when Cana- dian TV first went on-the- air, and none other than Joel Aldred, of Scugog Island, was there to help get commercial TV off and running. In the September 26 issue of Marketing, Canada's weekly newspaper of marketing communications, Mr. Aldred is featured in an article entitled "TV taps the mass market."" The article, written by Colin Wright, says it was Joel's golden, throaty voice which served as a rich backdrop for more pro- ducts than most people could remember, and he was one host or pitch- man who helped get commercial TV off and running in Canada. The lengthy article has Mr. Aldred reminiscing about the early days of television in Canada, and HEY KIDS! Check out our GIGANTIC WALL OF STICKERS! Drop in and get your FREE STICKER. "It is almost a certain- ty that anyone watching TV in Canada between 1955 and 1965 knew Joel Aldred's voice and face as well as his own,"' the article says. But Joel's interest was not only commercials. For a number of years, Joel moved into the newer role of TV host for TED.E. Bear's Tov many stars including: Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Bob Hope, David Niven and Dinah Shore toname a few. And as he recalls, there were weeks when he spent most of his time on air- craft flying between Los Angeles, New York and Toronto. . And how does Joel feel about television and commercials today? Well he ends up the story by saying "When I see and hear what's on TV today, I must admit I have a great hankering to get back into the business because there's a large void in terms of presentation and believability."' So if you're watching television some night in the not-too-distant future and you see a man stan- ding behind a shiney, new GM car; selling the benefits of a_finance company or one of a dozen other products, it just might be Joel Aldred on a comeback. "After all, the article concludes, "there are not many of those companies Joel Aldred endorsed that are out of business today."
