10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. October 25, 1983 Hanover Hill wows Canadian Holsteins confirmed their super- jority at the top show in the United States, the Central National at World Dairy Expo held in Madison, Wisconsin, October 7 and 8th. International visitors demonstrated their approval as the Canad- ian victors were named by Judge Richard E. Keene, Gilbertsville, New York. Canadian Holsteins are known for their dairy strength and con- stitution because of the benefits of a long-lived and more trouble free dairy cow. This profit- able blend of character- istics enable Holsteins to produce heavily year after year maintaining a youthful udder. Proof of this is the fact that a ten-year-old cow, Cath- land Countess owned by Hanover Hill Holsteins, Port Perry, Ontario can Those muffin blues Week seven: 14 Ibs. by Cathy Robb Gee, I did it again. I screwed up that diet banana muffin recipe. Again. This is so embarrassing. It's only one itsy bitsy banana muffin recipe and it's delicious and nutritious and I've messit up PUBLICLY twice in a row. Now I'll never get invited on one of those cook- ing shows. Maybe I have a muffin hang-up. Did mother throw muffins at me as a child? Did a muffin ever beat me up? Have I ever OD'ed on muffin mix? Do you really care? Here it is folks, for all you muffin lovers who tried that horrible recipe and ended up with muffin mush, who persevered and attempted the recipe with last week's correction, added flour and created muffin rocks. This is it, the real recipe, brought to you from the creator, Marg Sanders of Diet Workshop. Marg came in last week armed with recipes, a plate full of muffins (the real thing) and some insults for yours truly. Seems she fielded 28 phone calls as the result of my erring muffin ways. Sorry Marg. At any rate, here it is, the genuine article. The real live, honest-to-goodness recipe. To make things seasonal, Marg has substituted pumpkin for banana. Pumpkin Muffins pumpkin 2 cups all-bran 1 cup skim milk powder (not liquid) 1% tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. baking soda 3 pkgs. sugar substitute METHOD: Beat eggs and water together and set aside. In a larger bowl, mix by spoon all the rest of the ingredients -- add egg mixture and mix by spoon. Pam spray 18 muffin tins. Bake 375 degrees for 20 minutes. 60 calories each. : To make banana muffins, substitute 3 small ripe bananas (mashed) for the pumpkin. 63 calories each. 1% cups (canned) 3 eggs 3 ounces water 1 tsp. cinnamon se08es Marg also dropped over a pumpkin pie recipe designed for the low-cal people who want to have their pie and eat it too. Let's see if I can get it right! Pumpkin Pie 16 ounce can of pumpkin Pinch salt (2 cups) .% tsp. ginger 1 egg (beaten) 1% tsp. cinnamon 1 cup evaporated SKIM '2 tsp. nutmeg milk 4 pkgs. sugar substitute rd METHOD: Combine pumpkin with beaten egg then stir inrest of ingredients. Pam spray 8 inch pie plate and pour pumpkin mixture into pie plate. Bake in 350 degree oven for one hour. 465 calories cut into six pieces equals 77% calories each piece. A211] About so-called appetite suppresants: i Only amphetamines have been proven to sup- press appetite (from the common list of am- phetamines, caffeine and cocaine). Amphetamines seem to work by somehow affecting the brain's feeding centre, located in a big word called the hypothalamus; they may also decrease sensitivity of taste and smell -- senses that make eating enjoyable. A dog givenregular doses of amphetamines will ignore food until it starves, but people quickly develop a tolerance to the drug's effects. Amphetamines have no effect on eating prompted by psychological fac- tors, however. Remember, because these drugs have serious side effects, their use as diet pills is no longer permitted. The effect of caffeine is quite a different matter. While drinking coffee with a meal will briefly speed up your metabolism (so you burn calories more quickly), there is no proof that people who regularly drink coffee have faster metabolism than people who don't. Nor is there evidence that caffeine quells hunger -- in fact, some dieticians believe it may enhance appetite! The same is true of cocaine. While the expensive illegal drug does increase metabolic rate, its effects on hunger have yet to be thoroughly documented. (ALL 1] Need some quick inspiration? A horse can run faster than a man for a short distance, but if the two were to at- tempt a marathon, the man would certainly win ... that if you skipped rope at an average rate (5 cm/jump; 90 jumps/minute) for 15 minutes three times a week, it would take only three weeks until you had jumped as high as the CN Tower.
