Ir Al ae wid F BR cc PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. November 22, 1983 -- 25 Port Novice A's win championship On Nov. 19 and 20th, the J.T. Pearce Auction- eers travelled to Ennis- more to compete in a tournament and- came home with the champ- ionship. In the first game the Auctioneers came up against the Oshawa Canadiens. Halfway into the first period Duane Empringham scored the only goal of the game to give his team the 1-0 victory. The goal was assisted by Mike Sluggett. The second and third periods saw some very fast hockey action by both clubs. But with strong defensive work and steady goaltending by Port they were able to keep Oshawa scoreless. Defenseman Gavin Cochrane received the most valuable player award for his fine efforts throughout the game. The Auctioneers play- ed their second game of the day against Peter- borough's 8t. John's The Baptist and won 15-0. Shortly into the first period, Jeff Andrews opened the scoring for Port with the assists going to Sean Mec- enaney and Scott Heasman. Jeff Andrews came back with his second goal assisted by Sean McEnaney and Scott Heasman. Sean McEnaney gave Port a 3-0lead on an unassisted goal and by the end of the first period 3 more goals were scored by Michael Williams, Duane Empringham and Chad Garvock. Assisting on the goals were Chad Garvock, Steven Desautels and. Gavin Cochrane. In the second period, Sean McEnancy came Bantam B's run into a wall On Friday November 18th Fenelon Falls was in Port Perry to play Sportsland Bantam "B" at the Community arena. From all reports this team was big and very rough. Port Perry put up a valiant fight but were simply no match for this very big team of boys and dropped the game 8 to 1. Scoring Sportsland's only goal was John Lally with an assist to Warren Geer. Penalty minutes totaled 48 with Port picking up 16 of that number. Stacey Ballingall started in net and was hurt early in the game but we were glad to see him back in the net Saturday at the Little Britain tourney. The score does not indicate the calibre of play the entire team deserves credit for a job well done. Our next home game is Friday, Nov. 25 at 9 o'clock with Little Britain visiting. Come out and support Minor Hockey. Tournament Saturday, November 19th saw Sportsland Bantam's in Little Britain to compete in the annual tournament. The first game of the Port Bantam A's (From page 20) Sunday saw Port come out on the short end by a score of 3-2 against Simcoe. This loss put Port into the consolation final. Dave Burnett scored our only 2 goals with assist going to Traves, Baker, and Feasby. In the consolation final, Port again came up short. Essex showed a little more stamina late in the game to hand our boys a 5-4 loss. Scoring for Port - Traves, Harman. Dave Burnett with 2 goals. Assists to Culbert with 2, singles to Harman, Traves and Stapleton. Cobourg gave out m.v.p. awards to most valuable players on each team, every game. and divisional championship trophies plus championship and consolation trophies. M.V.P. awards went to Brad Menzies with 2, Rob Baker, Dave Burnett, John Harman, and Scott Feasby. These boys played very well and really earned these awards. They made both parents and Port Perry fans proud of them. Great effort made in a very well run tournament. Next game Wed. Sportsland just couldn't seem to get their game together and were trounced 8 to 5. Scoring for Port saw Mike Gibson, Blair Phillips, Rob Brown, Warren Geer, and Jamie Menzies with a goal each. Playmaker of this game was John Lally with 3 assists. Stacey Ballingal, Jeff Crone, Steve Connors, Blair Bailey and Blair Phillips were each credited with assists. Both teams spent time in the "sin bin', Port Perry with 14 minutes and Little Britain with 16. Game number two pitted Port Perry's Sportsland against Oshawa. This was a better effort by our boys as they came out on top of the 3 to 2 score. Scoring for Port Pery saw Jeff Oke put the puck away for 2 goals and John Lally with a single. Blair Phillips and Mike Gibson picked up a pair of assists with singles being credited to Robbie Brown and Warren Geer. Penalties again seeméd to mark this game with Port Perry picking up 14 minutes to Oshawa's 6. Consolation finals saw Sportsland against Bow- manville. This was a fast end to end game and at the final whistle Bowmanville was on top of the 4 to 1 score. Port's only goal of the game went to Robbie Brown assisted by Warren Geer. Throughout the tourney, Stacey Ball- ingal and Mark Kendall shared the goal tending Midgets split two On Wednesday Nov. 16 Port Perry Midget B's hosted Bobcaygeon and lost a close one 8 to 7. This was a well played game with very few whistles or penalties. Scoring for Port were: Nick Cracknell from Joey Forder, Willie Edwards from Tim Maw, Willie Edwards from Chris Saulnier and Chris Lane, Chris Saulnier from Ray Woodcroft and Chris Lane, Carl Durham from Nick Cracknell and Todd Reamsbottom. Carl Durham then scored the nicest goal of the game On Sunday Nov. 20, Port travelled to Uxbridge to take on their arch rivals and with a good effort by all team members came home with a 6-4 victory. Port's goals were scored by Willie Edwards with 2, Tim Maw, Mike Fluke, Andy Systma and Ron Brown. Chad Garvock scored the first goal of the period assisted by Michael Williams. Sean McEnaney scored the next goal unassisted. The next goal was scored by Jeff Andrews assisted by Sean Mec- Enaney. Jeff earned himself his first hat trick of the season. The 12th goal was scored by Lindsay Parry assisted by Michael Williams. Michael Sluggett scored his first goal for the season - unassisted. Steven Desautels scored the next goal assisted by Duane Empringham and Robin Prentice. Sean McEnaney scored the final goal of the game -unassisted to earn himself 2 hat tricks in the game. Sean Mc- Enaney~also received the most valuable player award for a fine game. Goaltender Andrew Pereman had 2 shutouts and made some great saves. Port went into the championship game on Sunday against a strong team from East Gwill- imbury. The boys knew if they hoped to beat this team, they had to tie up a couple of the boys with particular strong defen- sive playing. - Both teams moved fast and hit hard and at 3 minutes into the first period after alot of shooting around the nét Mike Williams of Port was able to deflect one in, the assist going to Lindsay Parry. Port's goaltender Andrew Pereman came up with a big save on a fast shot from East Gwillium- bury's top goal scorer. The Auctioneers defenseman Gavin Cochrane made a good rush and unassisted scored Port's final and winning goal. Neither teams scored in the second and final period and goaltender Andrew Pereman played well between the pipes on many difficult shots. For his strong work throughout the game, Andrew received the most valuable player trophy. The boys all played well throughout the game and were thrilled to come home winners of their first tournament for the sea- son. Pee Wee's totally blank opposition Three league games this past week netted the Port Perry Legion Pee Wee A's 6 points and three shut outs. When the Legionaires play their rivals, you can be assured of an impressive and exciting game. Monday night in Uxbridge was no exception as our home- town squad shut out the opposition 3-0. Chris McConnell played an outstanding game between the pipes, and most worthy of his second shut out of the season, both coming against Uxbridge. Magee in net for Ux- bridge seemed rather surprised on Port's first - goal at the 13:49 mark as Mills slipped one between the pads after taking aback hand pass from Kevin Gibson. Derek Fitzgerald also drew an assist on the play. For the remainder of the first and second period it was a close checking match with neither team getting on the scoreboard. Using the pointman paid off in the opening minutes of the third as Cornish deked Magee to give Port a 2-C lead, defense- men Poppleton and Wylie both picking up assists. With 1:22 re- maining perseverance and control in front of the net by Leatherdale and Sorley set up Toye as he poked in the final marker. Sat. night at home Paul Kett picked up his second shut out of the season, as the Legion Pee Wee A's shut out Ajax 6-0. Two goals were scored in the first period, Cornish carry- ing the puck into the opposition end, tucked one under goalie Romano to open the scoring at the 9:37 mark. Gibson picking up the puck behind the net, found the open corner for Ports second goal, Wylie drew the assist. Sorley was credi- ted with goal number three in the second period, as the puck deflected off Ajax defenseman into his own net. Romano had no chance on a good wrist shot - from Leatherdale with Sorley assisting, now putting the team ahead by four. Cornish picked up his second of the game on a power play as Ajax becoming frustrated drew a 4 minute penalty. The third period Port picked up 6 minutes in penalties, Kett and excellent defensive work kept Ajax off the scoreboard. With only 31 seconds remaining in the game, Harman taking a pass Cornish's stick handled around the defense to send home the 6th and final goal. Sunday in Bowman- ville it was pretty much a one sided effort, as the Legion Pe€ Wee A's connected for 12 goals. The Legionaires had a 2-0 lead after the first period, then added 7 more in the second and 3 in the final period. Scoring were: Cornish with a hat trick and 1 assist; Harman 2 goals, 2 assists; Sorley 2 goals, 1 assist; Mills 2 goals, Toye, Gibson, Grosvenor each had one: goal apiece. Leather- dale and Poppleton each had 2 assists while Maw and Fitzgerald had each one assist. McConnell picked up his second shut out of the week. The Legion Pee Wee A's next home game will be on Thurs. Nov. 24th at 8 o'clock when they will host Pickering Village.
