2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. November 22, 1983 Despite a projected surplus in 1983 of almost $2 million, water-sewer rates will be going up 3.1 per cent in 1984, if Regional council approves a recommend- ation at its meeting in Whitby this week. The recommended increase comes from the combined works- finance committees which met last week to set the 1984 rates. If the new rates get the approval of the full council this week, as expected, it will mean about $1.50 more on each quarterly bill for customers on the Regional water and sewer systems. (This is based on the average residential customer using 50,000 gallons of water per year. Heavier THIS-WEEK-ONLY SALE! Regional water bills are broken into two separate components for water and sewer charges. On the basis of this breakdown, the recommendation calls for a 6.9 per cent hike in the water portion, and no increase in the sewer portion, for the average combined jump of 3.1 per cent. The report from the joint works-finance committee notes that the Regional water works system will have an estimated surplus of $550,000 in 1983, while the sewer system will have an estimated sur- plus of $1.3 million, due almost entirely to increased revenues from additional customers this year. These surpluses will be used to off-set increased operating costs in 1984 estimated at two per cent for water works and seven per cent for the sewer system. In 1984, the Region is projecting that the water system will cost just over $12 million to operate, while costs for the sewage system will be about $15.2 million. And it looks like swimming pool owners will be losing their rebate of $10 in 1984, as the committee notes 'there is no longer widespread support for this concession to pool owners." The rebate had been granted to pool owners. because the water used in pools does not go back into the sanitary sewer systems. If Regional council approves the 3.1 com- bined increase this week, the average quarterly billing for Rubbish can cause a fire Piles of rubbish and oi- ly rags are some of the things that can cause fatal fires through spon- taneous combustion. Proper containers can help overcome this hazard. N water and customers will be $50.56 Water sewer rates take hike despite surplus in 1984, up from $49.05 this year. sewer NEIGHBOUR A BRIEF LOOK AT SOME OF THE NEWS THAT IS MAKING HEADLINES IN OUR NEIGHBOURING COMMUNITIES. BOWMANVILLE - Gerry Reulland is improving after an industrial accident at the St. Marys Cement plant. The Bowmanville man was working on the repair of an outdoor conveyor system when his foot became caught in a pulley. Newcastle's Fire Department worked for over an hour to free the victim's foot and leg, and although it appeared at first that the foot may have to be amputated, indications are now the foot may be saved. UXBRIDGE - The Music Hall started out their subscription series this year with a concert by Peter Appleyard. The talented musician kept his audience in stitches with his stories and jokes in addition to his displaying his talents on the vibraphone. CLAREMONT - An area man suffered cuts and bruises, but no broken bones recently after being thrown against a cement wall by an enraged bull. Gordon Symes was helping to load the bull into a truck when one of its horns caught the man in the side and it immediately swung its head, throwing Symes against the wall. Two men were able to attract the bull's attention and prevent more serious injury. STOUFFVILLE - The town's new Recreation Complex was unveiled recently and will be located on a 5.32 acres parcel immediately west of the High School. Top priority of the - new complex is a new 1200 seat ice arena, but the plan also includes two soccer fields; a 400 meter track; three tennis courts; a community hall; an indoor pool; a fitness centre and space for a second ice pad. The fund raising committee has raised almost $90,000 of the $200,000 the committee had as its goal. SUNDERLAND - The Golden Helmets motorcycle team and Safety Sam of the O.P.P. will be on hand on December 6 to take part in the annual Sunderland Santa -Claus Parade. Santa will visit with the children in front of the Legion Hall and two elves will help him pass out candy canes. BEAVERTON - Sylvia Oldenziel is recover- ing after an accident last summer during a vacation to New York State. While on a tour boat a mini tornado ripped a tree off the top of tHe gorge and it toppled down onto the boat pinning Oldenziel. The tree broke all the little fins (one to five) in her lower lumbar region. Her daughter, Heather, who was sitting beside her suffered a broken collar bone. She is still seeing a specialist in Toronto but reports her healing is going well. THURS.
