Midgets snap the losing streak by Amy Ware On Jan. 9 the midget junior and senior guys basketball teams hosted Dwyer H.S. in a triple- header. The midgets were looking to snap a long losing streak. They played a great game, coming out on top 45-41. Top scorers were Dave Burnett and Nick Van- derzwet. The juniors played a slow paced game (something they're not used to) and couldn't seem to get their shots - hitting. Dwyer surpass- ed them by a score of 45-38. Top scorers were Lee Wilbur with 13 points and Darryl Musselman 9 points. The seniors played the hottest senior team in Durham Region (Dwyer Saints). Port played an all around good game but Dwyer lived up to their reputation. Final score Port - 38, Dwyer - 75. Top scorers were Ken Elliot - 8 points, Colin Stone 7 and Kevin Taylor - 6. The guys next chall- Atom A'sgoona real scoring spree On Friday Jan. 13 the Malmont Farms Atoms hosted Pickering Village Atoms in a scheduled league game and it was a 10 to 1 route for Port. The line of Dan Sluggett at centre flank- ed by Jan Heyes and Scott Menzies led the way with a total of 10 points on the night. Jan Heyes had 2 goals and one assist, Dan Sluggett had two goals, and two assists and Scott Menzies had three key assists on some good forechecking and corner work. The seniors played an exceptional game but again glass back boards affected their shots. The final score was Port 38 and Henry 53. Top scorers were Colin Stone - 8 points, and Kevin Taylor - 7 points. The junior girls volleyball team ventur- ed to O'Neill Collegiate for O'Neill's annual invitational tourna- ment. Every team was put into a pool (1 or 2) Port was challenged to eight games and was victorious in seven. They beat O'Neill 15-14, 15-8 and North Park 15- 10, 15-3. They lost their first game to Pickering 13-15, but came back to win the second game and won 15-7, they also beat Henry St. 15-13, 15- 8. These wins left them first in their pool. This took them to semi-finals against Dwyer H.S. Being with only six play- ers, the tired Port squad went down to defeat 6- 15, 4-15. Congratulations on a great effort and a great day.
