The guest speaker at the last meeting of the Scugog Social Planning Council were Mr. Ron Kitchen from the Board of Directors of Partici- pation House Project (Durham Region) Inc., and Ms. Rhea Reed, Program Supervisor. They have been approached by the Social Planning Council because of our growing concern about the lack of services for physic- ally handicapped men and women who live in Scugog Township. . They began by explaining that Partici- Pation House is not, in fact, a house but a number of apartments and townhouses in Oshawa with 24 hour staff support for those residents who need it. Parapelegics and quad- rapelegics are living in these settings success- fully. By making use of Handi Transit, they are free to use many community resources as they are able and interested. Some are enrolled in night school courses and pre- employment programs; use indoor swimming pools for exercise and recreation; essentially anything any person Council looks at handicapped problems Rob VanMil is back from Holland Piano Music - Friday & Saturday Evening at EMIEL'S PLACE! would do as long as its in a building that is access- ible by wheelchair. The apartments and houses have design features that assist in the independence of handicapped people. Counters are lower, stoves have controls at the front, wall ovens are "used, and there are special grips and acc- essories in the bath- rooms. .In some cases the units have been designed specifically for Participation House with wider halls, door- ways and appropriate flooring. Mr. Kitchen and Ms. Reed game us an excellent present- ation and invited us to visit their services in the new year. The Scugog Social Planning Council intends to follow up on this much needed service, starting with the specialized trans- portation services so handicapped people can make use of their community and not be confined to their omes. Please join us at our next Luncheon Meeting on January 23, 1984 at the Port Perry United Church. Please call Mrs. Reta Reader if you are able to attend (985- 7732). The Scugog Arena may be alive with the sound of hockey games these days, but on the night of July 14, the place will be rocking to the music of The Hawk. Ronnie Hawkins, a king of rock and roll, and one of the genuine super-stars of the Canadian music scene for nearly 25 years, will hit the Scugog Arena for a two hour concert and show as part of the annual Western Week- end festivities in this town. Rompin' Ronnie is billed as the '"'last of the original rock and rollers," and at 49, he is just about the closet thing to a living legend in Canadian music. His appearance at the Scugog Arena July 14 will be the highlight of the re-vamped Western Weekend sponsored by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. One of the main changes to Western Weekend is the date. This year it will be held July 12-14, rather than the second week in August which has been the traditional date for the last decade or so. Committee members opted for the change of date in 1984 in an effort to allow more local people to take part in the festiviries before Club speaker is GM ad manager Mr. Gaetan C. Boily, advertising manager for Chevrolet, Olds- mobile and Cadillac, General Motors of Canada, will be the ' guest speaker at. the Canadian Club of Durham Region on - Thursday, January 19, 1984 at the Holiday Inn, Bloor Street East, . Oshawa, with dinner at "6:30 P.M. Members of General Motors dealerships in the Region have been invited to attend. Visitors should make reservations by contact- ing Grant MacDonald at 985-2107. And by booking a big name entertainer like - Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks, the committee is hoping for a large crowd at the Scugog Arena that evening. Ronnie Hawkins will play two sets that even- ing, each one hour long, and the back-up group will be the contempor- ary Oshawa band Cross- wind. The story of Ronnie Hawkins is almost as legendary as his music; how he came out of the Arkansas hills in 1958 and began playing the road-houses with his Ozark rockabilly. Over the last 25 years, he has had his share of career up and downs, but there is no doubt he has been a major mover and shaker in this has had a strong 'influence on other singers and musicians, and his name is recognized across the land. It should be a great night of music at the Scugog Arena, so keep July 14 in mind. ¢ SALES o LEASING e FLEET FREE Coffee & Donuts Our Low Overhead Offers You LOW PRICES!! 85-7354 HWY. 7A-12 MANCHESTER I SCUGOG CHRYSLER Lr You are cordially invited to Our GRAND OPENING January 19-20-21 or doe, mm mm C05 LER| one Revolution "Rompin" Ronnie Hawkins e SERVICE 7 e PARTS eBODY & PAINT We've got chrysler leaseAbility - AN
