After two full days of elimination curling, the rinks from the Peter- borough Curling Club skipped by Mary Hinan and Lynn Wyatt came out on top, defeating teams from Norwood in the final. To reach the final, Peterborough defeated teams from the Oshawa Golf Club and the Port Perry entries skipped by Judy Latta and Louise Haugen. There were nine dif- ferent curling clubs represented at the com- petition in Port Perry. The Peterborough en- tries will now go on to compete at the Division Level Tankard to be held at Toronto's Avonlea Club, March 7, against teams from four dif- ferent Ontario districts. And should they be successful there, it will mean a berth in the On- tario finals in Leaside, March 28. For one of the Peter- borough skips, Lynn Wyatt and her team of Ellen Ellis, Ciss Peter- son and Donna Farthing, it will be the third trip to the division finals, and they are hoping to be able to advance beyond this level for the first time. At the conclusion of Cornish team swims home with handful of medals The swim team from R.H. Cornish and Prince Albert Public Schools came home with a hand- ful of medals after com- peting February 4 in the Civitan International Meet at the Sir Wilfred Laurier Pool in Scarborough. The Civitan Meet, which is modelled after the Special Olympics for the Mentally Retarded, attracted teams from Agincourt, Don Mills, Scarborough, Peter- borough, Kawartha and North York along with the Fort Perry-Prince Albert squad which represented Durham. Roy Shier, Darlene Durward, Cory Stemp, Brett Taylor and Clinton Whiteley put on a very fine performance and were rewarded for their efforts with three golds, three silvers and five bronze medals. In addition to the ac- tual competitions, all the competitors enjoyed a full day of activities star- ting with a parade, welcoming address by Scarborough Mayor Gus Harris, and a meal and dance sponsored by various Civitan Clubs. The Durham Board of Education provided transportation for the team to Scarborough and also provided training time during January at Uxpool. The regular swimming program for the classes at Prince Albert and R.H Cornish resumed on February 2. Teacher Barbara Phair said she was very pleased with the fine showing by these students at the Civitan Meet. And the competitions aren't over yet for these swimmers. February 14, 1984 -- 29 Cartwright Public School News Teachers vs. students by Sharri Masterson and Bryan Beatty The months of 'December and January have been busy ones here at Cartwright. An event that will hopefully become an annual one, a student-teacher volley- ball game was held. The students with their expertise would have won if fate hadn't been against them. The final score looked like this: teachers - 33, students - 19. Our school Christmas Concert was held Tuesday, December 13th. Students from all grades performed in a variety of musical and dramatic presentations. Many students also per- formed at the Port Perry Villa on Decem- ber 8th. First term report cards were issued in December. From this the school Honour Role was set. It is now on 4 1 display in the front hall of the school. After the Christmas Break, the downhill ski program started which is every Tuesday night. This year for 6 weeks, 23 students will par- ticipate in the most suc- cessful program, which has been held for the last five years. Everyone is doing "so"' well. The Houseleague Volleyball games are finished and basketball has started. The intermediate students have just finished writing nine exams in total over a 6- day period. Exam reports have been issued. On February 9th, the Valentine Dance was held. A draw was held for a jar of cinnamon heart candies. Christina Stubbs was the winner with her guess of 5020. The actual number of candies was pics. The four grade seven representatives were: [Esther Kelly, Sheri Bouillon, Darryl Leatherdale and Chris Delong. The four grade eight representatives were: Niki Bardeleben, Bryan Beatty, Wanda 'Gaylord and Mindy Kellow. Our school is running a Bicentennial Project featuring many dif- ferent programs. An 8- week quiz program is being run for the inter- mediate students. The winners for the first 5 weeks were: Robert Keast, Michael Haines, Denise Tompkins, Jimmy Vernon and Scott Fletcher. Also, on February 16, grade 3-8 students will see a program on fur trading. On February - 24th students will see a presentation by Glenn Fallis on canoes. There will also be presen- tations by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Manvers Historical Society. Both programs start at 1 o'clock and everyone is welcome. The grade 8-students have seen presentations by both Port Perry and Cartwright High Schools. They soon will be filling out their option sheets, preparing for next year. To the intermediate boys and girls basket- ball teams we wish you continued success in your upcoming games and tournaments. Congratulations to the finalists in our junior public speaking com- petition. They are Tyler James, Jennifer Flet- cher, Susan Kyte, Tanya Mappin, Laura Gilbank, Jill Van Camp, Leslie Mackenzie, Nathan Robinson, Erica Hiemstra, Tyler McKee, Joel Schryburt and Chris Chorostecki. Junior Volleyball teams, girls and boys, played well but lost in the finals against Prince Albert. The junior basketball tournaments are coming up. The girls play February 20 and March 6. The boys play February 13 and 27. In volleyball houseleagues, for grades 3 and 4, Panther A won. In grades 5 and 6, Roadrunner girls won and Pinto boys won. A few grade 5 and 6 students have been chosen to be part of a Junior Math Enrich- ment Program. It is a very interesting and challenging class for all of those involved. Mr. Lorne McBurnie presented the grade 5 students with Bibles. Mr. McBurnie is a representative of the Gideon Society. Get well wishes are sent to Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Gunter.
