20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 13, 1984 Sports \ The Port Perry High School boys curling team came close, oh, so close to a trip to the all-Ontario curling finals to be held later this month in CE et Mae 'Winning two out of three games not enough Dean Haugen"s rink of Darrin Gibson, Dave Culbert and Andrew Petrie grabbed a silver medal at the COSSA championships held March 7 at the Port Perry Curling Club, less than two points behind the winning team from Oshawa's O'Neill Col- legiate skipped by David Black. Haugen and crew threw some fine stones to defeat Norwood 54 in their opening game and then put up a gallant ef- fort in their final game to beat O'Neill 9-7. But they just couldn't muster You gave it a good shot, guys. This team from PPHS came up just short of the gold medals in COSSA playoffs last week in Port Why are these guys from O'Neill Collegiate smiling? Well, they -- won the COSSA gold medals in play last Wednesday at Port Perry Curling Club, narrowly edging out the team skipped by Dean Haugen from PPHS. The turning point for the Port Perry boys was probably the final end in game two when Prince Edward skip Scott Stewart made an excep- tional shot on the last stone to hand Haugen a 4-3 defeat. As it turned out, that shot kept Haugen's rink from a berth in the all-Ontario finals. In the final game against O'Neill, Port - Perry still had a chance at the gold going into the final two ends. But O'Neill took one in the seventh and the eighth was blanked to shut down any chance for Port Perry. In the girls division, the team from Fenelon Falls edged out Centre Hastings by 1.25 points to win the gold medal and a berth in all-Ontario finals to be held later this month in Ottawa. The Port Perry High School girls team, which won a silver medal at the LOSSA final two weeks ago, curled very well, but lost a couple of heart- breakers in the late ends. The girls did rally for a victory over Uxbridge in the final game, but by that time, their chance at a gold medal had ld evaporated. The team was skipped by Sandra Liston with Carole Anne Elliott, Lisa St. John and Kristy Williams. Four girls and four PPHS boys just miss COSSA gold boys teams took part in the COSSA (Central On- tario Secondary School Association) playdowns at the Port Perry Curling Club last week. Pee Wee series all tied up Despite scoring six goals, the Legion Pee Wee A's will have to travel back to Ernes- town as the series once again is tied up at two apiece. Sat. March 3rd in Ambherstview the Legion Pee Wee A's played their most - impressive game of the season, Wylie, Popple- ton, Legere and Maw on defense played sen- sational, all three for- ward lines have never forechecked and back- checked so well. Mc- Connell - between the pipes supplied the team with hot goal tending as he stood his ground against some strong shooters. Only one shot found the target in the first fifteen minutes of play, a power play goal by Fitzgerald from Gib- son as Hogle sat out a double minor. Ernestown capitalized on a power play at the 14:03 mark of the second to even the score at 1 all. Poppleton controlling the play at the blueline _drew an assist on a goal by Cornish at the 11:39 mark, 47 seconds later Gibson scored from the faceoff with Mills and Maw assisting. Ernes- town retaliated with their second goal of the period, bringing them within tying reach. Port carrying the play to the opposition hit the target twice more on goals by Harman and Rodway, Leatherdale, Cornish, Sorley and Toye each drew an assist on the goals. Minor injuries did not stop the Legionaires from playing a strong third period, Ernestown made it 5-3 halfway through the period, a power play goal by Cor- nish from Sorley and Leatherdale put the game beyond reach as Port were content to keep dumping the puck out of their own end. Sunday March 4th, it was a scoring see saw battle, Ernestown scored the only goal in the first period, a shot from the opening faceoff deflected off Mec- Connell's glove and dropped into the net. the Legionaires were not without scoring chances but Curzon remained hot in the oppositions end. The scoring opened up in the second as nine goals found the mark. After playing catch up, Port held a one goal lead twice in the period and succeeded in having a 5 all tie heading into the third. The Legionaires once again took the lead in the opening minutes of the final period but this was short lived as Ernestown connected for three unanswered goals. Scoring for Port were: Defenseman Maw with 2 goals, 1 assist; Cornish 2 goals; Sorley and Mills one goal apiece. Assists went to Rodway with 2 while Leatherdale and Legere had one each.
