Dt al ™ TA eg, Dad ge a 6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 13, 1984 letters Ordered to stay off roads Dear Sir: "In reporter Cathy 'Robb's article last week concerning the storm of Tuesday, February 28th the statement was made that stranded "when a few bus drivers refused to negotiate their way north of Prince Albert". We would like to clarify and correct this impression by passing on a factual account of that day's events. One driver in partic- ular, Mrs. Elaine Wellerton, along with dispatcher, Mrs. Eleanor Hayes of Simcoe Transit had the foresight to make every effort to ensure the safe transportation of area children. At approx- imately 1:00 p.m. they called the Durham Region School Board voicing their profess- ional opinion that due to worsening weather con- ditions school dismissal should be called so the students could be taken Excuses (From page 5) took an old butter print, some leather postcards dated 1905-07, and an old Family bible full of coloured illustrations. The children seemed to enjoy it, and I went the rounds of four classes instead of the planned one! The response from the Seniors has been poor, perhaps due to lack of transportation, and the bad weather. So, 1 am offering a ride to anyone, within the next four weeks, who wishes to partici- pate in this Bicentennial Project for the children of Prince Albert School. Sincerely, Betty Kendell, 985-7213. students were home safely, Mr. Upton, head of the Board's transportation office has the authority: to call such an early dismissal but chose not to. All indications point- ed to inevitable danger- ous road conditions of which the bus drivers were first to show con- cern. By the time regular dismissal time arrived many bus drivers were ordered by the Board to stay off the roads. A letter has been sent to Mr. Upton suggest- ing, among other things that: 1. [Early dismissal should be based on pre- determined including input from bus drivers and school prin- cipals, also weather warnings and police reports on driving con- ditions. 2. If the children must remain at school, attendance must be recorded. 3. An emergency call system of parent callers be used to pass on information from the school (bus drivers, Elaine Wellerton has voluntarily set up such a phone list to keep parents of her young riders informed). 4. No child should be released into someone's Hands (From page 5) everyone in such a hurry now a days. You would think more people would lend a hand especially the ones that work for our town. I wonder what by-law says we cant't help each other. Where have all the nice people gone? Yours truly, J.
