At Scugog Memorial Library, April 5 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 3, 1984 -- 7 Margaret Laurence novel characters come to Port Perry Since 1979, five famous Canadian women have been travelling across the country and deep into the United States is a brown Volkswagon Rabbit! They are Vanessa MacLeod, Stacey Cameron, her sister Rachel, Morag Gunn and Hager Shipley -- the heroines of Margaret Laurence's great series of Manawaka novels, all brought vividly to life by actress Norma Edwards in one of the most successful touring productions in Canadian theatre, The Women of Margaret Laurence. Who is Norma Edwards? Well, when she was in Port Perry last year, she was Stacey, the Fire- Dwellers character struggling with her re- sponsibilities to life, her children, her husband, God and most import- antly, herself. She is a woman of 40. She has wide hips, a mortgage, and a husband who may be running around... something Stacey would not mind so much if she could do the same thing herself. Norman Edwards was also Hagar Shipley from the Stone Angel, a stubborn old woman, past 90, reflecting on a lifetime and her unwill- ing, rebellious journey towards self-knowledge and finally, a limited peace. Her audience at the Scugog Memorial Public Library was so appreciative of her fine portrayals of the two characters that Ms. Edwards is returning to the library this week with three more Women of Margaret Laurence. On Thursday at 8 p.m. Ms. Edwards will arrive at the library with Morag, Rachel and Van- essa in tow. Vanessa, from A Bird in the House, presents a funny and infinitely touching portrait of a girl on the road from the tight, controlled, inno- cent environment of the family to the harsh realities and uncertain- ty of the world at large. Rachel, from A Jest of God, is Stacey's young- er sister---a spinster school teacher caught in a deadly relationship with her mother by her own affectionate and deeply compassionate nature. And then there's Morag, from the Div- iners, a 47-year-old writer who has forged her past out of material of her memories by selecting, interpreting and fantasizing. As a writer, Morag is par- ticularly aware of her- self as an interpreter of her own memories. she is struggling to come to terms with her past as an integral part of the creative act. Actress Norma Edwards, who masters all five characters with- out makeup, costume tricks or wigs, began her career in British "A Columbia where she tourned extensively throughout the province with The Players' Club. Following her move to Ontario in the early 50's she has been involved in radio, television, and the stage as actress, director and teacher. She taught acting for . the Drama Department of Queen's University for nine years. Her stage credits have ranged from such diverse roles as Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?, The Way of the World, Hello, Dolly! and Mame. The one-woman show is adapted by CBC-TV veteran Juliana Saxton, directed by award-winn- ing Francess Halpenny and designed by Ryer- son resident designer Tony Abrams. The women of Marg- aret Laurence, decribed by one Regina critic as "a sheer wonder", began at a weekend Canlit seminar at Queen's University, when Norma Edwards was invited to perform a five minute excerpt from The Stone Angel as a tribute to the author. and guest of honour Margaret Laurence. The enthusiastic response of the audience, and partic- ularly of Margaret Laurence herself, was so emphatic that Ms. Edwards began to con- sider the idea of expand- ing the presentation to include the other Man- awaka characters. Which is how Juliana Saxton enters the story, as Ms. Edwards turned to the only person she thought capable of adapting and shaping such an imposing body of work. Together they set about the painstaking jigsaw process of edit- ing down the essence of the five books. Their collaboration has been exceptional. Ms. Saxton possesses not only the skills of an editor but the wits of an entrepreneur and the success of their production The Women of Margaret Laurence is as much due to Ms. Saxton's energies as it is SPRING SPECIAL!
