The fire that start- ed very suddenly com- pletely destroyed both the store and the garage 'in a matter of a few hours. Our community expresses our kind thoughts to the Bea- cocks at this difficult time. Glad to report that Grant Edgerton has come home from hos- pital after a very serious illness. Also Mrs. Shirley Turner is home again after another session of surgery - this time in Hospital. Oshawa Better health is wished for you both as well as others who are not well. Jim and Barbara Sleep, Blayne and Bris- tol have moved back into their renovated home last weekend. They will be glad to get their routines back again following the con- fusion that resulted from their house fire in March. Best wishes to the Sleeps. On Wednesday of this week, the Rangers are holding a Fashion Show at the C.E. Room of the United Church. * This event is open to anyone wishing to attend. Cost $2.00 per person. Todd Martyn enjoyed the holiday weekend south of Toledo, Ohio attending a B.M. Motor- cycle rally. Next Saturday and Sunday the Lions Club will be holding a Flea Market at the arena from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be many local craft displays. The regular Wed- i.esday evening Lions Club was a great success with Marlene Grass, a very dynamic speaker from the Can- adian Diabetic Assoc- iation. The Club made cash donations to both the Diabetic Association and to the Larry Cooke Trust Fund. On Saturday and Sun- day, May 12 and 18 Lynn Bazarin, Dawn Bayley, Carol Lewerentz, Diane Baumchen and Susan Whitteveen, led by Miss Susan Sheen, hiked thirty miles as a prac- tice hike for the gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. The girls set up camp at the home of the Mortons in Bethany. Miss Sheen not only shared her expert know- ledge of the fine art of camping but literally gave the clothes off her back (and the watch off her wrist) when the weather grew chilly and it was discovered none of the girls had a watch. Mr. and Mrs. Morton and Miss Morton made the girls feel right at home and even provided the use qf their luxur- ious van, complete with beds and warm blankets. We learned something about the year 2001 from Trivial Pursuit. The minutes of the April meeting were read and approved followed by the treasur- er"s report. Nancy Bryans reported that she had updated the dishes and kitchen uten- sils at the Rec. Centre and has delivered the gifts to the Nursing Home. The O.N.O. Swimm- ing program at Uxpool will run from July 3 to July 16 with the bus leaving Cartwright Cen- tral Public School at 8:00 a.m. returning about 11:00 a.m. Regis- tration will be held at Elaine Bailey's, 77 Scugog Street on Thurs. May 24 at 8:30 p.m. Uxpool fees are $20-23. depending on the class and the cost of the bus will be $10. per child with a maximum fee of $25 per family. 0.N.O. members are asked to supply a pan of squares for the Toast to Gord Paisley being held Sunday May 27, at 2:00 p.m. in the Public School. A motion was cariicu that we cater the Gr. 8 Graduation banquet on Tuesday, June 26. Joan Graham report- ed that the Cubs and Scouts are to plant trees over the next four years along the roads in Cart- wright. The O.N.O. agreed to help support this worthwhile project. Elaine Bailey has tickets for the Ranger Fashion Show to be held Wed. May 23 at the United Church. Roll Call was, wear as many slogan buttons, pins or broaches as possible and was well answered with many interesting pins some of which were real collect- ors items. Kathleen Dorrell was the prize winner with the most buttons. After roll call Daine had some of us trying out the hula hoop. While her friends have long . recongnized Sharon Wil- son's many talents we had no idea she was a champion with the hula hoop. Diane served a very tasty lunch while we visited and enjoyed the many buttons and pins on display. The June meeting is a pot luck dinner at Jean Goble's house at 6:30 p.m., Group 1 salad, Group 2 Dessert and Groups 3 and 4 main course. Thirteen members of the Morning Unit of UCW met at Joan Gra- ham's Lome. After a social half hour Unit Leader Eleanor Werry opened the meeting with * a poem, 'If no birds sang only those who sang best'. Minutes were read and approved. Margaret Mountjoy thanked everyone for their beautiful desserts and co-operation for our Dessert Travelogue. Our Unit will provide the Lion's Club with their dinner May 16 and General Meeting will be May 30 at 7:45 to begin with Pot Luck supper. For our June meeting we are planning a trip to Cullen Barns. Norma VanCamp con- ducted the worship. Her theme was May winds and Sunshine. Using Deuteronomy Chapter 33 verses 12 and Levit- icus Chapter 25 v.3. Norma told of some of her memories of wind and tumbling thistle when she was young out on the Prairie. Joan and Harvey then took us on their trip to Europe with pictures and comment- ary which was most enjoyable. Blackstock Nursery School Our year-end trip to Peterborough Zoo is on May 24.
