May 23, 1984 Sports Port Perry High School's Vaughan Me- Kee was a double medal winner at the COSSA track and field event held last Thursday at Civic Fields in Oshawa, and easily qualified for the Ontario Regional finals to be held May 25 in Ottawa. McKee had little trouble winning the Junior Discus event and repeated the feat with a first in the Junior Shot. In the discuses, he had four throws better than 40 metres, and was the only competitor to hit the 40 metre mark in the Junior competition. The same was true in the Junior shot as he had a couple of throws over the 14 metre mark Fred Cockerton gave his best in the tri- ple jump, but just missed qualifying for the Regionals in Ottawa. Pr. Albert hits for 2 straight Tuesday May 15 marked the home open- er for Prince Albert winning over Mount Albert 9-5. Coach Gene Hurst was very impressed with the come from behind victory. Olaison' Mount Albert threat- ened in the top of the sixth inning closing the gap to a 6-5 score. But Prince Albert scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth on base hits by B. Shanley, R. McLeod, Ron Wins- low and D. Canning. Ken Irvine went the distance on the mound giving up 5 hits and striking out 14 batters. On Wednesday May 16 Prince Albert travelled to Goodwood. K. But Prince Albert came out on top with a 2-1 victory. Goodwood load- ed the base in the first inning and scored their only run. It took Prince Albert six innings to score their two runs with R. Olaison starting off the sixth with a stand up triple Ron Winslow was hit in the back with the next pitch. Den Tullock hit a ground ball to first base to score. Olaison from third and move Winslow over to third base. On a wild pitch (Wheels) Winslow scored from third to win the game 2-1. Prince Albert hosted Sunderland Harvesters Tuesday May 22 at 8:30 p.m. at the Lakefront Diamond and then travel to Zephyr on Thursday May 24 to play the Zephyr A's. Leon Presner qualified for the midget 200 and 400 metres with second and fifth place finishes at COSSA. The Junior Girls relay team of Judy Brinkman, Stephanie Smith, Jenn- ifer Philpot and Kristy Armour took third at the COSSA meet and will compete in Ottawa. Drew Stark won him- self a trip to the Regionals with 4th place finishes in both the midget 100 and 400 metre hurdles. Cindy Summers just missed qualifying for the Ottawa event as she placed 6th in Junior high jump at the COSSA meet. The top five finishers in each of the COSSA events advance to the Regionals. There were more than 50 high schools from all over south central Ont- ario at the Central Ontario Secondary School Association track and field in Oshawa last week. Karate club Five clubs were repre- sented and Port Perry received its fair share of awards: five students won six medals. Michele Van Heinin- gen received two 1st place wins for both sparring and kata for women's white-yellow division. Allison Mahoney rec- eived 2nd place in ladies sparring white-yellow Division: Tracey Mollon placed 3rd in ladies sparring green-blue- brown Division. David Travis won 3rd .place for men's sparr- ing, orange-green Div- ision: Ian McDougall placed 3rd in men's junior white-orange Division: Mike Davis brought home 2nd place in men's sparring, white-yellow Division. The summer session begins June 3.
