In the entire province, only eight students emerged with two medals, Vaughan was one of the select group. His silver and bronze also earned him the distinction of being the only male athlete in Durham Region to win two medals. Haugen's started early by scoring 3 runs in the top half of the 1st inning on hits by Danny McKee, home runs by Dave Canning and Irvine reached base on an error by the catcher only to see Rick Olaisen hit a double to score Irvine. Port Jr's. scored 2 runs in the bottom half of the 1st on hits by Healey, Christie and Wilbur. But never threatened again until the bottom of the fourth inning. Pt. Jr's. loaded the base with none out on two singles and a walk only to see Irvine strike out the next three batters. Haugen's scored 4 more runs in the last 3 innings on hits by Brian Shanley and Denny Tulloch, Danny McKee and Randy Prosser. Pt. Juniors scored twice more on hits by Todd Wilbur, Taylor and Mark Jeff- rey to complete the scoring. OFSSA rules stipulate that the winners in each heat and the next two fastest times qualify runners for the final. The two day track and field meet held annually for the provincial high school championship now attracts 2,500 runn- ers from across the province and is the largest meet of its kind in North America. These factors serve to underline the significant accomplishments of McKee and Presner. As a result of his efforts, Vaughan McKee was personally invited, by the Canadian Olympic discus and shot put coach, Ivan Pintaric, to attend the Olympic clinic at York Univer- sity on June 15. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 5, 1984 -- 23 slo-pitch event Roy's Enterprise of Oshawa unleashed the heavy artillery Sunday afternoon to easily de- feat the Smugglers from Scarborough in. the championship game of the first annual Galley Gators Slo-Pitch tourna- ment in Port Perry. Although the Smugg- lers opened up a four run first inning lead, Roy's put the game out of reach in the second with a merciless hit barrage and continued the same through the later innings. Roy's picked up $400 for the first place finish and the Smugglers went home with $150 for their efforts. In the consolation round, Oshawa Mud- hens defeated Ajax by a score of 12-11 to win $200 in prize money, and in Ladies winit 14-12 The Dennis Anderson Chev Olds Ladies Lob Ball team from Port Perry played their first game of the season Wednesday night de- feating the Hampton Shoppers Ladies team 14 to 12 at the M.J. Hobbs school in Hamp- ton. Janice St. John play- ing her first game for the D.A.'s was number 1 up to bat and started the contest off in style by hitting a home run. The Hampton team fought hard and was leading the game by a score of 11 to 8 in the sixth inning when with three on base Eve Johnson hit a home run for the D.A.'s. Both teams played very well considering 'the weather was more suitable for hockey then basement. Probably the most exciting game in this three-day tournament was a semi-final match between Roy's and the Mudhens. It was a hard fought affair that went two extra innings before Roy's emerged on top with a 11-10 victory and a berth in the champion- ship game. This was the first slo-pitch tournament held in Port Perry this season and it was hosted by the Galley Gators of the local league. The weather was near per- fect for the three days of competition, and members of the Galley team say this will become an annual event for the first weekend in June. wr There were six Port Perry teams entered in the 16-team event, but the only one to advance to competition on the Sunday was Port Perry Auto Glass. This newly formed squad gave a fine account before going down to defeat 7-2 in the semi finals to Uxbridge.
