LUKE'S COUNTRY STORE - - Mayor cautiously supports a move for Region headquarters Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor says he could support a decision whereby Durham Region would acquire a site on Rossland Road for a new Regional building, but he doesn't think the Region should be rushing into anything at this time. The site in question, about eight acres, is located on the north side of Rossland Road, directly across from the present Regional build- ing. That site is now owned by the provincial government, but could become the property of the Region in a deal in which Durham would sell the present building to the Ontario govern- ment and then lease back office space for Regional purposes. "I'm fairly satisified that the Rossland Road location would be quite adequate for the Region' (new building) Mayor Taylor said Mon- day morning. But if the present building is sold, he would like to see Dur- ham take a few years to assemble the necessary financing before mak- ing the decision to build. However, he said there is the concern that if Durham decides not to sell to the provincial government, the Region may never find a buyer for the present building. Last week, the Reg- ional council's manage- ment committee asked Durham staff to come up with a report on what it costs Durham now to lease office space in Oshawa and Whitby for such departments as finance, planning and public works. The committee also received a report from chief administrative officer Donald Evans which suggests that Durham sell the build- ing to the province and then lease back office space for a few years. Meanwhile, another issue is causing Region- al councillors concern, and that's the claim by Oshawa that the city has a 30 per cent "interest" in the Regional building, thanks to an old agreement it has with the . former Ontario County. Oshawa Mayor Allan Pilkey is adament that the Region must recog- nize this interest he claims his city has in the building. Commenting on this development, Mayor Taylor said he is under the impression that all claims and liabilities were taken over by the Region when Durham was formed in 1974. However, he said the issue could end up in court and "i"m prepared to live with the court ruling, no matter which way it goes". It's Derby time!
