A special guest at the ceremony was Ontario Health Minister Keith Norton who spoke about why the dedication of the wing to Dr. Dymond was so appropriate. Mr. Norton called him a '"'model of inspiration, a talented physician, outstanding politician, and the architect of the health care system enjoyed by 8.5 million people in Ontario'. While noting that the provincial government paid $200,000 towards the construction cost, Mr. Norton also men- tioned the contributions large and small that came from the people of this community. One of these was the efforts of two young Blackstock girls who sold 20 bags of popcorn at 10 cents each and turned all the proceeds over to the building fund. After the ribbon was snipped and the plaque unveiled, Dr. Dymond told the gathering he was "overwhelmed by the kindness of the folk whom I have lived among for the last 40 years". He praised Port Perry as a great place to live and said when he and his wife Jeanne came here they planned to stay just a few years. But the reason they stayed is that it is such a fine place to live. He recalled that many years ago the first hospital in Port Perry ri needed a debenture of $34,000, and local offic- ials did a lot of soul- searching because at the time that seemed like an enormous sum of money. Dr. Dymond gracious- ly accepted the tributes paid by the previous speakers and the honour of having the new exten- sion named after him. Health Minister Keith Norton had warm words of praise for the way Scugog citizens helped raise money for this $700,000 extension. (N "If I've done anything to benefit you people, then I'm glad of it", he said at the end of his address. Following the speech- es and ceremonies, those present were given guided tours of the new facilities at the hospital, followed by an outdoor reception with light refreshments. Hospital administrator David Brown addresses the large crowd perfect weather, and following the speeches guests enjoyed a tour of onhand for the opening ceremonies.
