20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 26, 1984 Sports More than 250 young softball players and coaches made their way through the streets of Port Perry Saturday afternoon for the annual Minor Softball Parade. Wearing their team colours and carrying signs indicating the team sponsors which are so important to the organization, - the play- Minor softball recognizes Bill Mark for his loyal support ers walked from Port Perry High School to the lakefront diamond for opening ceremonies and a series of short exhibit- ion games which gave the kids a chance to show off their skills. Parade marshalls were Bill Lawson, umpire-in-chief for this zone and assistant Pat Brown. They were at the Tua PRE a "WAN ] Jon head of the parade, riding in the recently restored antique fire truck, courtesy of the Scugog Fire depart- ment. Also riding in the fire truck were the two youngest players in the Port Perry softball organization, Andrea Grills and Shane Norton. Music for the parade was provided by i Bill Mark, probably the most avid baseball fan in Port Pery was presented with several gifts, including his own spot in the bleachers right behind home plate. With Bill are president Glenys Windsor and past president Rob Cooper. Just before the start of the exhibition games, Mr. Brown threw out the ceremonial "first pitch" to Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor and catcher Bill Lawson. And there was a special presentation to Bill Mark who has been a fan of minor softball and all sports in Port Perry for many, many years. League president Glenys Windsor and past president Rob Cooper presented Mr. Mark with a cap, a windbreaker and a sports seat. They also designated a special spot in the bleachers right behind home plate where Mr. Mark always sits to watch the ball games. He was delight- ed with this recognition and the gifts he receiv- ed. Other special guests in the parade included PPHS King and Queen Jamie Lee and Jackie Abraham with Prince and Princess Dave Bur- nett and Lisa James. Following the exhibit- ion games which featur- ed players from Squirt, Mite and T-ball teams, there was a special draw for donated prizes. Kevin Gassien won four tickets to a Blue Jay game donated by Mother Jacksons of Port Perry and Robt. Clark was the winner of a bat donated by Sportsland. Kids march in their annual parade During short speeches, both Ms. Windsor and Mayor Taylor paid tribute to the contributions made to minor softball by local businesses who sponsor the teams. Port Perry Minor Softball has 360 young- sters registered this year in the five to 16 years age groups. The annual parade is the culmination of Minor Softball Week in Ontario. More than 250 youngsters and coaches wound up with exhibition games at the took part in the Minor Softball Parade which lakefrom diamonds. Ladies blast by Hampton The Dennis Anderson Chev Olds Ladies Lob Ball team from Port Perry defeated the Hampton Balson Ladies team 27 to 4 last Wednesday evening. Everyone on the DACO team was right on with their hitting, especially Eve Johnston with two home runs. Diane Harper played both left field and second base and turned in an outstanding effort. Honourable mention has got to go to Judy Reader for base stealing. Making catches for Hampton that drew applause from everyone including the opposing team was rover Mary Ann Found. DACO plays in Port Perry Wednesday even- ing 6:30 p.m. at the Legion diamond against the Port Perry Nursing home team.
