The painting had been in the collection of Kent (left) and Doug Farndale of Port Perry, who decided to present it to the artist as it has considerable sentimental value. (See story for details) Dode Crow's Backyard goes home Painting is sentimental There was a happy reunion last Saturday morning at the Scugog Memorial Library in Port Perry. "Dode Crow's Back- yard' is going home to stay. That's the name of a small oil painting which had been in the collec- tion of Doug and Kent Farndale of Port Perry. And last Saturday, they had the pleasure of returning "Dode Crow's Backyard" to Jim Shortt, the artist who painted it some 35 years ago. "Oh, how delightful, I wish I was that young again. What a marvell- ous coincidence", was the reaction of Mr. Shortt when Mr. and Mrs. Farndale present- ed him with the canvass which depicts the house and back yard in summer of a man named Dode Crow. The painting has great sentimental value for Mr. Shortt, for not only is it one of the first works he did in his career as an artist, it was painted from the bedroom window of the family home in Milton where he used to live as a young man. "The members of my family have been very interested in getting this painting back", said a beaming Mr. Shortt as he looked at the piece of art he hadn't seen for many years. He went on to say that he will be giving the painting to his younger brother Terry, who act- ually spent his child- hood growing up in the house in Milton which overlooks Dode Crow's Backyard. Jim Shortt now lives in Toronto and has had a successful career as a full time artist for the last 16 years painting landscapes, still-lifes and portraits. He open- ed a one-man show at the Scugog Library Sat- urday morning with some 30 of his paintings. Doug and Kent Farn- dale were at an auction in Cobourg about five years ago when they spotted "Dode Crow's Backyard", and were immediately attracted to it. They stayed right to the end of the auction and wound up buying the painting for some- thing less than $20. Although it was signed on the back, they were not familiar with the artist. After making enquir- ies, they were later able to contact Mr. Shortt and found out the details of this painting. Earlier this spring, arrangements were made with Mr. Shortt to open a show at the Scugog Library and Mr. and Mrs. Farndale decided it would be only fitting to return the canvass to the artist for it obviously had signifi- cant sentimental value to him. Mr. Shortt said the painting had been sold about ten years ago with his father's house and contents in Newcastle, and that was the last time he had seen it. Mr. and Mrs. Farn- dale were a little sorry to see the painting go as they had grown very fond of it, but seeing the look on Mr. Shortt's face more than made up for it. So '"'Dode Crow's Backyard"' has gone full circle, and is now back in the hands of the artist who created it more than 35 years ago.
