They need your help Teenagers learn fine art of rejection doing survey Three teenaged girls are learning about rejection this summer. - They're mastering the fine art of being told to get lost and being hung up on. They've made some 200 telephone calls in the past month asking people to complete a brief survey -- and 130 people have said no way. The Scugog Crisis Centre hired the girls, with the help of a government grant, to research and complete a random survey on incest throughout Dur- ham Region. By the end of the summer they hope to have a statisti- cal report in booklet form of the number of runaways who are victims of incest. To make the survey statistically accurate, they must finish at least 100 surveys. The pro- blem is, most people they call just aren't interested in talking about incest--one of society's last remaining closeted taboos. Nineteen year old Jane Brose, a Port Perry High School grad- uate who is planning on a legal secretary course at Durham College this Fall, is philosophical about the problem she and her colleagues are up against. Most of the response they have gotten so far is negative and even though they've been hired to learn about the Region's incest problem, they're also taking an intensive course on rejection. '""We called every number in Goodwood to get 10 responses,'"' Jane says. "People say, 'Why are you calling me? Qur family doesn't have any problems'. They think we've chosen their names out of the phone books but we haven't. It's all random'. Seventeen year old Kimberley Ross and sixteen year old Nancy Nippard, both PPHS students, are also work- ing on the project. Their goal is to make the public aware that incest does occur and to let people know that the Crisis Centre is there to listen. '"The reason for choosing this particular topic as a summer project for this area is ae creauon d'emplois Eté Canada wandaaa job creation project Investing in youth that in the five and a half years of the centre being operational, incest is becoming a more openly talked about subject', Jane explains, "and the number of calls pertain- _ to incest have increased as appears to be the case all over North America." She points out that this doesn't necessarily mean incest is happen- ing more but it does indicate that the subject is being more openly talked about. "We want to make the public aware that it does happen," Kimberley says. The girls would appreciate any feed- back from the public, good or bad, and are more than willing to answer anyone's questions if they call 985-8850. ~All calls will be held in complete confidence. But in the meantime, if you happen to get a call from either Jane, Kimberley or Nancy, give them a break and don't hang up. At least, not right away. Un investlissement dans la jeunesse The next time you get a phone call from a young surveyor, give her a break and try answering some of her questions. Could be the girl on the other line is one of these three teenagers who have been hired by the Scugog Crisis Centre to complete a survey on incest. That's Nancy Nippard (left), Kimberley Ross and Jane Brose. See story for details. 985-2532 176 Perry St., Port Perry Great looking hair takes expert care.
