Suprise upset for Mowbray Ontario Riding Liberals select Herrema to run Gary Herrema, chair- man of the Region of Durham, and a former Mayor of Uxbridge, overcame the odds last Wednesday night and was picked by Ontario Riding Liberals to repre- sent them in the coming Federal election. Over 700 people crowd- ed the hot Pickering High School auditorium to hear party favoured Gwen Mowbray and the late-comer Gary Her- rema before casting their votes. Mowbray is the executive vice- president of the Ontario Riding Liberal Associa- tion and seemed to have an edge on Herrema who entered the race only a couple of weeks ago. But in the end, it was all Herrema. The Ux- bridge Township dairy NN 1.7 | | farmer is reported to have received 319 votes of the 560 cast by party supporters, which came as a surprise not only to Mowbray workers but also Herrema's team. Upon being introduced as the next Liberal to take the riding and go to Ottawa, Gwen Mowbray told her supporters that she would back Gary, and Se "winning the riding is more important than who the candidate is." In accepting the nomination Mr. Her- rema said that he would begin his campaign im- mediately, and with the backing of Gwen Mowbray and her sup- porters he would defeat Scot Fennel and the Con- servatives on September 4. Earlier in the evening, as Gary Herrema was addressing the party delegates, he became very emotional saying "This is the first political thing' that my daughter has been to." With a lump in his throat he con- cluded "She's my pride and joy." But it didn't take long for him to regain his composure as the next fifteen minutes he pep- pered the audience with a fiery speech that had to make even the Mowbray supporters take note. Summing everything up at the end, Herrema said that he was a 'tough Liberal" and "his own man" and if he was elected he would use "blood and sweat to give the Tories the tears." A disappointed, but cheerful, Gwen Mowbray raises opponent Gary Herrema's arm in victory after it was announced that he had won the Liberal nomination for the Ontario Riding. Over 700 people jammed Pickering High School last Wednesday evening as the delegates listened to their two candidates, and cast votes for the per- son they wanted to carry the Liberal colours in the September 4 Federal election. * LAWN & GARDEN SUPPLIES * FERTILIZER & FENCING call ...
