1 Township wheels moving on lawn bowling green Plans by the Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club to find a new home took a giant leap forward Monday afternoon as Township council agreed to start proceedings to buy land for a new green and clubhouse. The new site, which "has been under con- sideration for some time, is located near the Cen- tral Seven Workshop on Durham Road 8. The site is now owned by Carlan Developments. Members of the Lawn Bowling Club have been working for a couple of years on the plans to move from the present Queen Street location in downtown Port Perry. They say the Queen Street site, which has been used for lawn bowl- ing since 1904, is too low, too wet and not up to regulation size. And Bowling Club president Bill Blair told councillors on Monday that the present clubhouse is in such poor condition, that it is ac- tually keeping the members away. Mr. Blair said the lawn bowling club now has 117 members, but he predicted this figure would increase once a new facility is completed. "We feel this project will greatly enhance Port Perry," he stated, ad- ding that with a regula- tion green and proper clubhouse, the local organization could apply to host provincial cham- pionships which would bring a lot of visitors to the community. Mr. Blair and club vice-president Stan Rickard told council that the total estimated cost for the new facility would be $93,100, including cost of the land, constructing the green, a new clubhouse, services and a fence. Last year, Scugog council committed $25,000 towards this pro- ject, and Mr. Blair said the remainder of the funds would come from the following sources: Wintario $25,000; New DEEGAN Denture Therapy Clinic 305 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY -- OPEN -- BY APPOINTMENT ONLY! And he said there is a chance the project could be eligible for a further grant of $5000 from the Canada Works program. Mr. Blair said the club hopes to be able to start grading the site for the new green this fall and start construction of the clubhouse in the spring. He noted that while lawn bowling is a sport generally associated with senior citizens, it is growing in popularity among people of all ages. "That's what is so great about the sport. It brings people together of all ages," said Mr. Blair who is a former provin- cial champion. Council's decision to start negotiations to pur- chase land fur the new site was carried unanimously. The municipality would retain ownership of the property and lease it to the club on a yearly basis. The present lawn bowl- ing site on Queen Street is owned by the Township. If the club does move to the new site, there was some discussion Monday after- noon about what might happen to that land on Queen Street beside the old library building. Council feels it has limited commercial value as it is on a flood plain. ine safely = Time As our school doors open, we, at Philp Pontiac Buick Limited take this oppor- tunity to wish the students a safe & happy year of learn- ing and urge all motorists to be careful at all times while driving!
