a a a a Et a TSH NS py ~~ I 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 25, 1984 * Ride-a-thon raises $9,000 for handicapped Blackstock Area News by Joyce Kelly On an absolutely beautiful day on Sat- urday the Durham Region Horseback Rid- ing for the Handicapped Association ride-a-thon was a tremendous success. Fifty-seven riders from Toronto, Aurora, Pickering, Orono and surrounding areas participated in this day which raised approximately $8,900 in pledges. These funds will be used to purchase equipment, insurance and other necessities for the continuous oper- ation of horseback rid- ing for the handicapped youngsters. Many, many volunteers includ- ing the St. John Ambul- ance, the Police and radio operators all worked together to ensure the well-run 25 kilometer ride. Parents prepared and served each rider a cold turkey dinner upon arrival back to Hoskin Stables. Congratulations to all involved for such a successful event. Congratulations to Leanne VanCamp and - Jim O'Donnell who were married in a very pretty wedding on Saturday afternoon in the Black- stock United Church. The reception and wedd- ing dance were held in the Recreation Centre. Best wishes Leanne and Jim. The rehearsal party was hosted by Norma and Merrill Van- Camp at their home on Friday evening. The wedding pictures were taken at the beautiful country home of Harold and Eileen McLaughlin. Sincere congratula- tions are extended to two couples who hit 7:30 p.m. 0.N.O. The September meet- ing of the O.N.O. was held at Ruth Marconi's home. Following Trivial Pursuit questions, the July minutes were read and approved followed by the Treasurer's report. Aileen reported that the newly purchas- ed chairs and tables are now at the Recreation Centre. Plans were finalized to cater the VanCamp wedding on Sept. 22nd. It was voted that the Husband's Night Out take the form of a dinner and theatre. The executive will make the final plans. A motion was carried to make a donation to the community group raising funds for Sandra Stronge, the girl with the many, many allerg- ies who is soon moving to the Blackstock area. Plans for Cartwright's Bicentennial Celebra- tion on October 13 are in full swing. Please help out if you can. Bill Lishman has done an excellent job of restor- ing our Pioneer Memor- ial lettering. The Hymn "God Who Gives to Life its Goodness" was sung with Grace Hall at the piano. Lisa read from Matthew and the Acts with a fine commentary and prayer. The Roll Call was very interesting when each told about a book read recently. The minutes were read and approved. In it was a report of the United Church Service when Rev. Brian Robinson of Scugog was the guest minister when he and Rev. D. Davis exchang- ed pulpits. The young people thoroughly enjoyed Duggan, the talking dog during story time. Grace Hall sang a beautiful solo "The Stranger of Galilee'. Rev. B. Robinson preached a thoughtful sermon 'If 1 were a Rich Man". Also on Sunday the Youth Group opened the season with » a hayride and weiner roast at the home of their leaders, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Malcolm. A good number of young people attended this fun event.
