Mitchells want people to shop in town PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. November 13, 1984 -- 17 Trying to curb Oshawa buying There were more than a few disappointed people in Port Perry the day 'from my heart..." made its debut. The owners of Scugog"s newest card and gift shop, Tom and Daphne Mitchell, tried to keep the theme of their store under wraps while it was under construction, just to keep folks guess- ing until opening day. But when stained glass hearts began to appear all along the top of the store-front, people's curiosity began to get the better of them, and some cornered the Mitchells with "edu- cated" guesses. Many were convinced Tom and Daphne were opening a Lovecraft store, full of adult games and scintillating lingerie. So they were pretty crestfallen when '"'from my heart ... "' turned out to be a card and gift shop and not the source of erotica they were looking forward to. On the other hand, "from my heart ... " was jam-packed with people who appreciate its contents, when the Con Anyone interested in J i participating in Winter [i Agricrew or hiring the crew, contact Karen Vaughan at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office in Uxbridge, 416-852-3328. The cash register was ringing all n.orning long as shoppers picked up on the store's selection of Hallmark cards, gift wrap, ribbons, party supplies, stationery - not to mention the gourmet teas and food, gift baskets, candies and chocolate. Among the more exotic edibles are chocolate- covered ants and baby bumblebees, chocolates filled with Bailey's Irish Cream, and an airplane liquor shaped bottle labelled "A Nip of Northern Comfort," filled with maple syrup. And then there's more traditional fare such as escargot-shaped choco- lates, Canadian-made preserves, shortbreads and fancy biscuits. "People want nice quality, unique foods and there just wasn't any place in town to get it,"" Tom Mitchell said. "And we didn't want to flood the market with giftware. There's enough of that in town, what with Luke's Coun- try Store and the Settle- Tone on Tone with attached pad ZZ LOOPED CARPET ment House." The Mitchells also wanted to separate "from my heart ... " from the card shops that frequent shopping malls like the Oshawa Centre. ao ey twanttodo a shopping centre look-a- like," Daphne pointed out. Even the name, "from my heart ... " was chosen to evoke the emotions usually asso- ciated with special occasions and gift- giving. The store is decorated to comple- ment that theme, right from the stained glass hearts to the hearts on the wallpaper. Customers who have toured through the new store have invariably remarked on the changes wrought on the store since the Mitchells bought it from Sammy Levinson last August. After 46 years in busi- ness in Port Perry, Sam and Ann Levinson put their store up for sale and moved to Toronto to enjoy retirement. The Mitchells had put an offer on the store last January and assumed possession in August. Before they opened 'Ted E, Bear's, Tom and Daphne had considered making it a card shop instead of a toy shop, but the couple realized the floor space at Ted's was too small. "The card market hasn't really been add- ressed in this town, and although cards are available in other stores it's only in bits and pieces," Tom said. "We wanted to give people a spot where they know they could come and get what they want. "We're trying to get rid of this mental thing people have about going to Oshawa to shop. People who aren't doing their Christmas shopp- ing in Port Perry are really missing the boat. All the merchants in town do so much to make sure everything is right here.
