Smales became Lion Ed. Smales when he was in- ducted into Lionism by Distact Governor Peter Jackson. Lion Bob Bruce, as sponsor, assisted in the induction. Lorraine Smales and Ellen Bruce were special guests of the club to honour the new member. Margaret Simmons of the Addiction Research Council in Oshawa spoke to the Lions about the problems of alcohol and drug abuse by school students. Simmons was well informed on the sub- ject and made an im- pressive presentation. She stated that 85 per cent of adults drink alcoholic beverages and that 75 per cent of the kids do. A student often says or thinks "My Dad has a drink because he had a tough day at work, but I had a tough day at school too!' The speaker emphasized that adults dealing with alcohol and drug abuse by younger people must be concern- ed, calm and collected. Simmons thanked the Lions for the interna- tional program on drug and alcohol abuse con- ducted last year by many REVERSIBLE DECORATOR FAN 3 speed, reversible, light adaptable, 6" down rod. She felt that such an international organization as Lions which is so well established in many countries can do a lot by working together and challenged all individual- ly and as groups to become involved in preventing this type of abuse. District Governor Peter Jackson spoke briefly and urged Lions to keep alert and active with respect to com- munity needs. The motto for all Lions is "We serve." Artist's work in Mississauga Artist Leslie A. Parkes has been invited to exhibit a number of his paintings throughout the galleries of the Mississauga Library System during the first three months of next year. The invitation came as a result of an award which one of his entries had won at a juried art show in that city last year. Generally using sub- ject matter of local nature, the event signi- fies a growing aware- ness of Parkes' talent. "I love his work!" stated the curator Keith Moreau, 'I think the branches and the public will too." While busily conduct- ing classes in life draw- ing for adults and basic art lessons for young artists in his commun- ity, he is steadily prod- ucing new paintings as well. They appear regul- arly at the Ronden Art Gallery in Oshawa. Meanwhile, he super- vises the art depart- ment in one of the most respected package design companies in Canada.
