Scott Howey of Port Perry also took a rink to the zone playoffs over the weekend and won two and lost two games. games with a pair of weekend victories over the Lakefield Chiefs and Uxbridge Bruins. Leading scorer Brian Nicholson led the team Friday evening in Lakefield with three goals and three assists as the MoJacks doubled the - Chiefs 8-4. And on Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the largest crowd of the season was treated to a fine display of hockey as the MoJacks tripped the Bruins 5-3. With the two victories MoJacks have 17 points, good enough for fourth spot in the very tight Junior C standings. Just a few weeks ago, the team was languishing in the league basement. There was nothing fan- cy about the MoJacks victory over the Bruins Sunday night. The team did it the old fashioned way: hard work and good goal-tending by Clay Lovering who made the key saves when they were needed most. Forward Paul Bytter- worth provided the scor- ing punch for the Mo- Jacks with a "natural"' hat trick with singles go- ing to Jeff Johnstone and Brian Nicholson who popped one into an emp- ty net with just seven seconds to play in the game. Captain Scott Wallace had a hand in four of the five goals. Butterworth got things going at 4:54 of the first after he took passes from Brad Flaxman and Wallace, scampered in from the left side and beat Bruin goalie Brian Tarelton with a shot to the high corner. The same trio again clicked at 4:11 of the middle frame with Flax- man feeding Butter- worth a perfect pass in front of the Uxbridge net to give MoJacks a 2-0 lead. But the Bruins, who have been playing sound hockey this season, battl- ed back with two goals of their own late in the period to knot the game at 2-2. Paul MacEwan got the first at 17:21 on a partial breakaway, and Mike Feasby slid one past Lovering from the slot at 19:18. The game was up for grabs in the third period as both teams continued to play crisp, clean hockey. Butterworth notched his third straight goal at 2:30 after Wallace lugg- ed the puck deep into the Bruin zone and fed a pass in front of the net. Bruin captain Tim Freckleton put his team into a 3-3 tie at 9:38 when he ripped a hard shot from 30 feet which beat Lovering cleanly. The game winner came at 13:06 as the puck took some weird bounces in the Bruin crease and appeared to go in off the stick of an Uxbridge defender. Jeff Johnstone got credit with John Vaz and Brian Nicholson drawing the assists. With about 30 seconds left, the Bruins lifted their goalie for an extra attacher. After a face-off deep in the MoJack zone, Brian Nicholson picked up a loose puck and fired it home from just across the centre line. The MoJacks out-shot the visitors 48-27 in this highly entertaining con- test, which featured just 11 minor penalties. The same was not the case when the MoJacks paid a visit to Lakefield Friday evening, as there was a steady parade to the penalty box and several players were tossed out for wishing each other Merry Christmas. MoJacks went to work early and opened a 3-0 first period lead on a pair of goals by Brian Nicholson and a single by Jeff Johnstone. They added three more in the middle frame by Rob Nicholson, Rob Sedore and Brian Nicholson while the Chiefs picked up all their goals in this period. In the final period, the MoJacks shut the Chiefs down as Ken Harman kicked out 12 shots and Rob Nicholson and John Vaz turned the red light to make it an 8-4 final. The line of Brian Nicholson, John Vaz and Jeff Johnstone had a very productive evening with a total of 14 points. - After getting off to a difficult start this season, the MoJacks have played solid hockey for the past four weeks, winning six of eight games since November 19. And they have been getting solid goal-tending from Clay Lovering and Ken Har- man. In the last five games, they have given up just 19 goals, while the team has scored 34. Players like Mike Ryan, Rob Nicholson, Rob Sedore and Kevin Trapp have settled down along the blue line, and there is no question that the addition of Jeff McColl to the line-up has helped greatly. McColl is blessed with fine speed, handles the puck well and plays tough in the corners. MoJacks have a couple of big games coming up this week as they pay a visit to Uxbridge on Fri- day night and on Sunday night will take on the Bowmanville Eagles in Bowmanville. JoAnne Desautels opened the scoring on an assist by Tina Soomre. Tina then set up passes to Kim Loudfoot and Sherry is who both found the mark. Colleen Yorke put a pass from Colleen Yorke put a pass from Colleen Scala in the net. Sherry quick- ly slotted two more with help from Kim and Colleen Yorke. Tina and Kim completed the scor- ing in the first period.
