6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. December 18, 1984 letters Matthew in Boston for tests (From page 5) ful and were quite pleased with the follow- ing recovery period. At this time we would like to express our sincere appreciation and say thank you to all of our friends, relatives, neighbours and to all others (many, many people we did not know) who took Matthew into their hearts. Your help, understanding, prayers and best wishes will long be remembered and cherished. The support shown brings to mind a quote I once read "In This Busy World, It's Wonderful that people like you still have the art of taking time for others and of giving from the heart." To the people who sent Matthew cards at the hospital, another thank you. I have not seen a bigger grin on a boys face than Matthew had upon receiving your cards. So far everything has worked out very well, a successful chemo- theraphy phase made it possible for a successful tumor operation which in turn made it possible to progress to the stage we are now entering. We have a compatible donor which we hear is quite an achievement as not often a compatible donor is found, so we chatterbox (continued) Our phone conversation was bitter, and Whiz said she thought she might write an addition to her project on impaired driving. Just before she hung up she said, "I'm glad you took me out of that driver's education lesson." "Why?" 1 asked. "Cause I learned more at that accident than I did in those books. If the people who drink and drive could see what damage they cause, and how they hurt other people, they wouldn't do it anymore." I thought to myself, Pretty smart for a twerpey little sister. on 0 A 7% Q Last Min ute Shopper Let strawber?y ops s help you -- i feel with the above success and the prayers and wishes of everyone reading this article and of our many friends who won't that Matthew is on his way to a successful recovery. But the manager-owner Ken Dowson says the business will continue to be family owned and operated. With Ken in this photo from left are Nan- cy Dowson, Debbie Henderson and Norene Crosier. (See story for details) Dowsons change name and colours Dowson's Red and White Foodmaster will still be independent and family owned, even with a new name and a change in the corporate colours. Over the past few weeks, the food store at Port Perry Plaza has been under-going a series of interior changes that will culminate early in the New Year when the name will become Dowson's Value-mart. Included in the change is a switch in the com- pany colour from red to shamrock green, the ad- dition of an in-store bakery, expansion of the frozen foods section and the moving of the busy courtesy counter away from the front door to a more central location in the store. But manager-owner Ken Dowson told the Star last week that the store will continue to be fami- ly owned and operated bfsiriess, and there is ply no truth to any rumours that it has been bought out by a chain corporation. Mr. Dowson explained that the name change from Red and White to Valu-mart is part of what he described as a "re- alignment in the marketplace" by Na- tional Grocers, the wholesale company which supplies products to Red and White stores and others. About 150 Jarger Red and White Stores across Ontario will be known as Value-mart, while other smaller Red and White stores will be called Freshmart. Mr. Dowson said the change-over has been in the planning stages by National Grocers for the past couple of years. Advertising, window bills, store interiors and even the colour and style of the uniforms worn by staff will be standardized in all the stores affected by the change. Even though the store here had to absorb the costs of new uniforms, signs and renovations, Mr. Dowson said he welcomes the change to Value-mart as it will allow for more com- petitive buying at the wholesale level which in turn will enhance the competitive edge of retail prices on the shelves. '""We feel we have always been com- petitive. This will just make us more so,'"' he said. Dowson's has been a family owned and operated food store in Port Perry for about 40 years, and went with Red and White in 1960. MONTH OF DECEMBER OPEN: Boxing Day & New Year's Day!
