16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Mon. December 31, 1984 by John B. McClelland The Port Perry Mo- Jacks came within an eye-lash of something not many teams in the Central Junior C loop have done this season: hand a defeat to the first place Bowmanville Eagles right in their own back-yard. In a game played December 23 in Bow- manville, the Eagles had to scramble late in the third period to salvage a 6-6 tie with the MoJacks. In fact the Eagles had to yank their goalie in the final minute and just manag- ed to push the puck behind MoJack goalie Clay Lovering with 31 seconds left in the match. : It was a disappointing turn of events for the MoJacks, but there is some consolation in Wha What a team! What a team!, those Stone Real Estate Pee Wee B's. Coaches, parents and fans were treated to 3 excellent hockey when our boys travelled to Omemee to play in their 2nd tourna- ment of the year. With David Talbot playing superb goal in the first game, Port downed Peterborough Battery 8-1 with goals from Greg Fritzgerald 2, and singles going to Doug Cummings, Cole Perry, Scott Menzies; John Ennis and Ryan Free, assisting on these goals were Chris Forder 4, John Ennis 3, Graham Sullivan 2, Greg Fritz- gerald 2, Cole Perry 1, games of grabbing a point in the Bowmanville Arena where 'the Eagles always play it tough. The 6-6 saw-off snapp- ed a six game MoJack winning streak, but the gritty performance against the Eagles is a further indication 'that the MoJacks have be-. come a team to be reckoned with. (The same two teams hooked up in a return match December 30 at the Scugog Arena. See next week's paper for details). At the Bowmanville Arena, the Eagles jump- ed into a quick 2-0 lead as Brian Keenan found the range at the 44 second mark with a shot along the ice, and Brian Heard made it 2-0 at 4:06 when he jammed in a rebound. Adam Cummings 1, Aaron Cochrane 1, Phil Teno 1, and Scott Men- zies 1. In the second game Port played against Millbrook and came away with a 5-0 win. David Buxcey played well in goal stopping many shots. Ryan Free opened the scoring in the first period on a pass from Doug Adams. In* the second, Adam Cummings scored from Greg Fritzgerald and Chris Forder, then 1 minute later Doug Adams from Scott Men- zies and Kevin Mantel made the score 3-0 after 2 periods. The third period saw John Ennis make it 4-0 on a pass from Greg Fritzgerald and a rush from Gra- Air Conditioning/ Heating The end is near: Take advantage of 'off-oil' Government grants now! The MoJacks refused to roll over and play dead, however, as defenseman Jeff McColl got things going at 6:14 when he lugged the puck out of his own zone, stepped across the Bow- manville blue line and drilled a low shot along the ice. Rob Sedore and Brian Nicholson drew the assists. Just 20 seconds later, Mike Brown tied it 2-2 when he scored off a scramble in front of the E:¢ les net. McColl drew an assist, but Jeff John- stone made the play when he dug the puck out of the corner and fed it in front of the net. ° The Eagles took a 3-2 lead into the dressing room after the first period thanks to a nice passing play at 8:16 finished off by Scott Heard. ham Sullivan, unassist- ed ended the game 5-0. The third and Championship game with David Talbot and David Buxcey splitting goal tending duties, saw our boys come up against the host team Omemee. The excellent work on defence by Forder, Mantel, Puckrin and Sullivan managed to ward off many scoring attempts by the opposition. In the first period Greg Fritzgerald from John Ennis and Adam Cummings, slipped one pass the Omemee goalie to go ahead 1-0. The second period saw Fritzgerald get his 2nd of the game with the assist going to John Ennis. Port continued to play strong in the 3rd period and had the fans sitting on the edge of their seats, with 24 seconds left in the game, Ennis scored the final goal from Sullivan. Thanks goes out to Gary Geer, Ed Teno and Bob Free for the excell- ent job they are doing with the boys and we wish them good luck in the New Year. Bowling MONDAY NIGHT LADIES 7 P.M. He took passes from Paul' Butterworth and Scott Wallace, and drilled a perfect shot from the left point that caught the inside of the post. The teams were play- "ing five aside at 6:59 when the Eagles again took the lead as Darryl Rowe scored from a sharp angle at the side of the net. Less than 2 minutes later, MoJacks leading scorer Brian Nicholson turned on the magic with a rising shot - from 25 feet that sailed just under the cross bar. McColl and Brad Flax- man set this one up with some fine passes inside the Eagle blue line. Flaxman then went to work at 11:28 as he did some nice work along the boards to control the puck, then took a return pass from Paul Butter- worth and flipped the disc home to give Mo- Jacks the lead for the first time in the game. Mike Brown with his second of the night made it 6-4 at 12:52 with a shot along the ice as Jeff Duncan fed a pass from the corner. Late in the period, MoJacks had an excell- ent chance to take a three-goal lead as the k.agles ran into a double penalty. They put on a __ lot of pressure but cowdn't get the puck behir.d the goalie. MoJacks were full marks for their four goals ir the middle frame &¢s they took advantage of the power play and vut-muscled the Eagles in the cor- ners and along the boards. The Eagles Brian Heard closed the gap to 6-5 when he put in a rebound at 7:01 of the third with the MoJacks playing a man short. With six minutes left in the game, MoJacks were forced to play two short for 1:50 but they held the Eagles off the board as Lovering turn- ed aside several scoring chances. But Darryl Rowe got the tying goal with 31 seconds left off a wild scramble in front of the net after the MoJacks had been unable to clear the puck from their zone. Just seconds before the final goal, MoJacks had missed the empty Eagle cage on a long shot which would have put the game on ice. It was a gruelling, hard-fought match that turned chippy at times. MoJacks took 14 minors, while the Eagles were caught for 17. Midway in the second period, MoJack captain Scott Wallace had to be carried from the ice after he appear- ed to take a stick in the mid-section. But he returned to action in the final frame. The MoJacks were without defenseman Rob Malcolm who is lost for the year with a knee injury, and Mike Ryan who had a family commitment. Team officials say that Vaughan McKee is nearly ready to return to action after missing a month with a shoulder injury. The MoJacks are right i in the middle of the toughest part of their schedule. They hosted the Eagles on December 30, and next Saturday night (January 5) at the Scugog Arena, the Port Hope Panthers will be in town for an 8:00 P.M. face-off. The following night, the MoJacks will be back in Bowman- ville. After that, the Mo- Jacks will have just four games remaining in the regular schedule, and they will have to con- individual needs. The Central Junior C playoff structure has been radically changed this season as all eight clubs are assured of a playoff berth no matter where they finish in the standings. The first place team will have its pick of opponents from the clubs which finish in the fifth to eight spots. The second place team will | have next choice; the MoJacks battle for point in 6-6 saw-off third place team will pick third and the fourth place team will face whatever team is re- maining. All opening round series will be best of seven affairs, as will be the semi-finals and finals to decide a league champion. MoJack coach Bob Marquis is hoping to finish higher than four- th, so he will at least have some choice who the club will meet in the opening round of the playoffs.
