\ ~ J ronsleenay STAR -- Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1985 'Late start for the new i ice fishing season Mitch Rewbold is. keeping his ear tuned to the weather report these days and hoping that the ice fishing on Lake Scugog will take off this week, finally. - The unseasonably mild temperatures have delayed pickere fishing by about two weeks, but Mr. Newbold told the Star on Sunday that if the mer- - cury stays below freez- ing, the lake should be dotted with fish huts by the weekend. ~ Mr. Newbold, who - Operate Beacon Marina n Caesarea, said that up til Wednesday of last week, there was open -the winter water in parts of the lake, but by the weekend, enough ice had formed to allow several private owners. to put their huts out off Caesarea. . He has more than a dozen two and four- person huts for rent, but said he will allow them to go out until he's certain the ice conditions are safe. "It's just not worth the risk. If somebody ever drowned in one of my huts ...... " He said Sunday that there is up to eight inches of ice on the lake, and conditions will remain good as long as there is not another prolonged thaw where temper- atures climb above the freezing point. Despite the uncertain ice in the latter part of last week, fishermen were out and were repor- ting pickerel in the two pound range. Mr. Newbold said most pickerel taken from Scugdg at any time of year average about two pounds, but there are plenty of five and six pounders, and every so often some lucky angler will hook one in the eight to 12 pound range. He said one of the best spots for ice fishing is just out from the public Ringette Juniors pick up the silver On Sunday December 30, our Sportsland Junior Ringette team participated in the Whitby Tournament held at Iroquois Park Arena and came home with the consolation prize. That's two weeks before the March 15 deadline for ice huts to be off the lake. Beacon Marina will provide ice huts at $13.50 per day per person, and that includes heat. Somebody interested in casual fishing for a day or evening can even rent the tip-ups.'
