'Multiply that feeling several times and you'll i know how two young A handicapped women felt gE when they moved into their own apartment J last summer. 3 After being coddled and looked after by parents and-or friends all their lives, they're suddenly experiencing freedom and indepen- dence first hand --- and loving it. "For the one girl, it's enjoying the freedom : from being with her / BATH TUB Oh hes 20590 169.99 tte Only reg. 7500. 99.95 mother all the time. And I think at age 22, it's a Ey a a | | i | e) ) 4 § freedom most people work for," says Frank Murphy, the residential director of Smith House, and a Central Seven employee working on the' program that is making this freedom possible. "It's the same feeling except maybe stronger than most people's." The program, called Supported Independent Living (SIL), isn't new to larger centres like Toronto and Ottawa. Mr. Murphy recalls the first SIL program being implemented in Ottawa in 1976, but for smaller places like Port Perry, the program is brand new. larly last year Central Seven board members began actively planning for SIL, aware that such - a program could be used by many clients at both Central Seven Indus- tries and Smith House, a residence for the handi- capped on Scugog Island. Most agencies wait for government assistance - before going ahead with the program, but at least one young woman was ready to move out on her own, and by the time May 1984 rolled around, there was also a vacant apartment --- a rare commodity in Scugog Township. So Central Seven board members contacted the landlord of the apart- Frank Murphy ment building and dis- cussed SIL with him, assuring him 'the rent would be paid on time and the prospective occupants would be good tenants. The landlord agreed, and without government funding, an agreement was struck. The initial outlay came from Cen- tral Seven coffers, but the monthly rent is paid by the tenants, who work at Central Seven Industries and collect family benefits. . "It's enough to live on and they're able to get by but they certainly don't have a lot left over for luxuries,"" Mr. Murphy says. Donations from the community, including furniture and kitchen equipment was appre- ciated and came in handy when the first tenant moved in July. She was later joined by another tenant in Nov- ember (the names of both young women are confidential). Not that they are left totally on their own. When the first tenant moved in, she was given 24-hour support from Central Seven workers for the entire first week. Gradually that support (which includes meal planning and prepar- ation, and assistance" with tasks like banking EVALUABEBLE COUPON ALL STAR SATELLITE DISHES 133 TAUNTON RD. WEST, OSHAWA 576-6962 and budgeting), was reduced and now -the pair receive 20 hours of support each week (four hours at night, five days . a week). Ultimately, Mr. Mur-. phy would like to see the young women living completly on their own without - support --- although it would al- ways be there if needed. Plus, "It's less expen- sive than running a "group home," Mr. Mur- phy adds. "But, of course, only people with enough skills can take part." . So far, there's a wait- "ing list for SIL of 34 people, who won't be able to experience their own independence until more furniding is avail- able, either through the government or dona- tions. Central Seven also needs the helping hands of volunteers willing to act as a friend to these ' people, who can help them integrate into the community and show them new things. "We really need the volunteer support,' Mr. Murphy says. "That goes for Smith House as well." If you'd like more information about vol- unteering or the SIL program, call Central Seven at 985-8511.
