Er NS ---- mr Pe I pp FT - Ontario isn't the only place in the world where folk art is popular. Until February 8th, an exhibit of Chinese Folk Art is on display at Scugog Memoria) Library, featuring a col- lection of whimsical pieces purchased by library employee Marilyn Wallace during recent trips to China. To further enlighten those interested in crafts such as paper cutting, water-colours and hand- embroidered clothing, A Village of Painters, -a film presented to the Canadian government by the Chinese government, will be shown Tuesday (tonight) at 7:30 p.m. A true fan of Chinese art and lifestyle, Mrs. Wallace has made two trips to China (19 days in 1983 and three weeks in 1984) and plans still another trip this summer. This time however, she'll be the tour guide with a group of people from all over North America, including a few from Port Perry area, California, Fort George, Victoria, Vancouver and Oakville. She's called her group "The Dong-Xi Group' meaning "The East- West Group' because the tour members hail from both ends of the North American continent. One of the things she likes most about China is the fact you don't have to tip anybody for anything, leaving you extra cash for picking up souvenirs or pieces of Chinese art. During her first two ex- cursions to the far East, Mrs. Wallace has col- lected a wide variety of Chinese folk art, most of which she purchased from roadside painters and vendors. Among her favourite pieces is embroidered clothing made by one of the country's minority groups. Although 90 per cent of Chinese people are of the majority, an ethnic group called HAN, the country boasts a multicultural system with some 55 minority groups. About tue minority groups, Mrs. Wallace says "They're the ones . who are very colourful in costumes and are famous for song and dance." The embroidered clothing in her collection was bought because, "It's very expressive and you think of the Chinese people as dour, but they have a happiness about them. Especially the minority groups.' ATTENTION TEENS: Good Times SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9th - 7:00 P.M. at Port High Gym See next week's Star for details! ALAN J. RISEN :.. us LAW OFFICES OF RISEN.
