16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. February 26, 1985 dna The towell clamped gently between Lady Beave's teeth is her "baby," and she tows it through the Chapman house as if it were a real kid, instead of just a towell Glen and Chris Chapman use to dry her off. Lady is a beaver who likes cheese Beaver Aerobics The Workout is the Chapman's nicknamed for Lady Beave's favourité challenge -- digging a hole in the kit- chen floor. With a natural nose for damp- ness, Beave headed to the basement door right from the first, and has attempted to dig her way through the floor to get to that delicious dampness ever since. Trouble was, the Chap- mans like their floor in one piece, so they covered Beave's digging spot with a thick pane of glass. Now she digs happily away at the glass, building up an imaginary pile of sawdust with her One of Lady Beave's favourite places is she indulges in apple treats. her own private bathtub, in which (above) front paws, and then kicking the imaginary pile av ay with her back feet wien it gets too high. One day a family friend, mesmerized by Beave's seemingly futile efforts to break through the glass, remarked, "It's depressing when you think she'll be doing that for 15 years (a beaver's lifespan) and won't ever get through the glass." Beave doesn't think about the Workout that way, however. To her, it's just a job that needs doing, and she does it much the same way a working man plugs away at an assembly line. Strictly PR Anyways, the Workout is just a diversion. Lady Beave's real job is strict- ly white-collar, teaching school children about beavers, doing adver- tisements for Ontario's tourism trade, and star- ring in the occasional feature film. Real P.R. stuff. And what's , more, thanks to the Chapman's careful upbringing, Lady Beave thinks it's just great. "We've done a lot of things with her and she's not under stress at all," says Glen. *'I can take her through huge hotel lobbies and convention centres and work with her and it doesn't bother her at all." While some animal lovers balk at Beave's work schedule when they first hear of it, they quickly realize the feisty little beaver is content with her stress-less job, and back off. And besides, if it hadn't been for Beave's career, the Queen and the furball story might never have been told. It was last October in scenic Sudbury, the of- ficial opening of Science North, a cousin of Toron- to's Science Centre. Being somewhat of an attraction all by herself, the Beave was there with Glen and Chris in tow, to say hello to a roster of famous guests, including Her Majesty Elizabeth, Queen of England, and Prince Phillip. While waiting for the line of guests to stream by, Glen kept Beave busy feeding her chunks of ex- pensive camembert cheese, leftover from a banquet the night before. Only In Canada? When the Queen was presented to Beave, the chunky beaver was chawing merrily away. "What is it eating?"
