February 26, 1985 --- sports Four goal lead evaporates in final game with Eagles by John B. McClelland The Port Perry Mo- Jacks have been knocked out of the Central Junior C playoffs, bowing four games to one to the Bowmanville Eagles. After doubling the Eagles 6-3 on February 20, the MoJacks went in- to the Bowmanville Arena last Friday night and for a short while they looked like they were on their way to forcing a sixth game in this best of seven semi finals. The MoJacks built up a 4-0 lead by the mid-point of the opening period and had the Eagles on the ropes. But they simply could not deliver the knock-out punch as the Eagles rallied in the se- cond and third periods en route to a 9-6 victory. The 'opening 20 minutes belonged to the MoJacks as Jeff Butter- worth opened the scoring at 3:08 on a pass from on id a Brad Flaxman of the MoJacks managed to get this shot away during Junior C playoff action against Bowmanville last week at the Scugog Arena. Down three games to none, MoJacks handed the Eagles a 6-3 defeat, but Bowmanville won the series at home Friday night Mike Brown. Butter- worth snapped a hard shot from the left side which just caught the in- side of the post. Three minutes later, Brad Flaxman scored on a carbon copy shot from the right side with Scott Wallace and Rob Nicholson drawing the assists. Just a dozen seconds later, Brian Nicholson staked the MoJacks to a three goal bulge with a details) High scoring playoff action On Monday Feb. 18/85 the Malmont Farm Atoms hosted Bowman- ville in another playoff game and skated to a 6-0 victory. In the third period Jason Cochrane scored his se- cond of the night with the assist going to Gavin Cochrane. At 12:08 Jason _ Cochrane earned his hat trick on another fine unassisted effort. Special note to the two goaltenders Shawn Larocque and Andrew Pereman who have been playing very steady in close to make it 4-2 at 2:35, and the MoJacks had just finished killing a couple of minor penalties when Eagle captain An- dy Terry drilled a screened shot from the point at 8:30. Just 16 seconds later, Pierre St. Amand tied the score for the Eagles as he took a puck off the back-boards and slipped it past Clay Lovering. The MoJacks were guilty of some sloppy clearing in their own end which led to a goal at 9:45 by John Young and the Eagles had the lead for the first time in the game. But Wayne Snodden tied the game at 13:11 as he pounced on a rebound in front of the Eagle cage after Brian Nicholson had drilled a shot from the slot. The goal that probably broke the backs of the Mojacks came on an Eagle power play at 19:56 of the second period when Brian Heard beat , Ken Harman with a hard shot from the left side. Jeff Johnstone made it a 6-6 tie at 3:15 of the third after he took a pass from Snodden and fired a shot through traffic. The game winner came at 10:46 off the stick of Darryl Rowe who shovelled the puck across the line after a wild scrambe in front of Harman. The MoJacks had a glorious chance to pull the game out of the fire when Eagles Darcy Huber was assessed seven minutes in penalties for going after MoJacks Jeff McColl, who drew a two minute minor on the play. But the Eagles shut down the open ice and prevented the MoJacks from getting any quality scoring chances. They were a man short when Andy Terry car- ried the puck the length of the ice and rapped it past Harman at 12:13 to give his team a 8-6 lead. That was the crusher as far as the MoJacks were concerned, and with Harman out of the net for an extra forward, the Eagles John Young scored with 30 seconds left to make the final 9-6. It was an obviously disappointing turn of events for the MoJacks after taking an early 4-0 lead. It was not so much that the MoJacks "blew this lead' as the Eagles demonstrated a great deal of poise and pa- tience to show why they are the heavy favourites MolJacks bumped from playoffs to win all the marbles in the Central loop this season. "Game Five Last Wednesday even- ing at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks smack against the wall came up with a solid performance to hand the Eagles a 6-3 defeat. After spotting Bowmanville a 1-0 lead at the five minute mark, Paul Butterworth tied the score with an unassisted marker late in the period as he fired a shot from the side of the net. The second period was just 31 seconds old when Brian Nicholson gave the MoJacks a 2-1 lead, and that was the first time in four games that Port Perry owned a lead over the Eagles. Jeff Johnstone won a faceoff, slid the puck back to Nicholson and he drifted a shot from 25 feet that just trickled over the line after goalie George Ken- nett made the initial save. At 13:03, Johnstone and Nicholson turned a carbon copy goal with Nicholson drilling a shot along the ice to give Mo- Jacks a 3-2 lead. Port Perry was short-handed at the time. A little more than a minute later with Mo- Jacks enjoying a power play, Wayne Snodden made it 4-1 with a quick shot from the short side. Bob Horton drew the assist on this one. MoJacks carried the play to the Eagles during much of this period and out-shot the visitors 14 to eight. The turning point of the game probably took place in the opening minutes of the final frame as MoJacks were two men short for near- ly two minutes and held the Eagles off the score-board. At 12:05, Brad Flax- man pumped in a shot from the left side with Paul Butterworth pick- ing up an assist to make the score 5-1. The Eagles Tim Preston cut the margin to 5-2 off a scramble as Clay Lovering was not able to put the glove on a wild bouncing puck that barely found its way acoss the line. But 23 seconds later Rob Nicholson converted a Johnstone pass at the side of the net to give the MoJacks a four goal bulge. Eagles finished off the scoring late in the game (Turn to page 23)
