MCHECH PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 5, 1985 -- 19 About this time next year, every youngster playing hockey with the Port Perry Minor: Association will be very familiar with Fun- damentals in Action, or FIA as it is called. The Association is now a part of this skills development program that was put together mainly by former Chicago Black Hawk defenseman Pat Stapleton and a group of other ex-NHL players, including goaltender Marv Edwards. Mr. Edwards spent two hours at the Scugog Arena Sunday afternoon conducting a FIA clinic for about 60 young players and coaches from five Novice age teams and a Bantam House League squad. Basically, FIA is made up of five series, each with three drills which are progressively more difficult. According to Mr. Edwards, the stress is on the fundamentals of the game: skating, pass- ing, carrying the puck. Each drill in the series focuses on a number of skills. For example, in Series One, there are 66 different skills. Mr. Edwards said following Sunday's clinic, that not only do the drills help develop skills in young players, they force the players to start putting some thought into the game. Although the program was introduced to coaches and players in Port Perry just after Christmas, the real em- phasis will begin next fall when it will be man- datory for all coaches to incorporate the drills in- to their practises and a quick drill will be held before house league games for the two teams on the ice. . PPMHA president Grant Williams told the Star Sunday the Associa- tion is committed strong- ly to the FIA program. "Our executive decid- ed it was the only way to go for this hockey organization,"' he said, stressing the point that coaches will be required to use the drills in their practises. Once the young players on a team learn a specific drill, it takes no more than ten minutes for them to go through it, and Mr. Ed- wards stated that if the drills are done correctly, a player will handle the puck more in ten minutes than during a 60 minute ganie. Also included with (he skating and puck- handling drills is an in- struction package strict- ly for goaltenders and next fall, a rep from FIA will conduct a clinic for 'coaches, goalies and parents who want to work with their sons away from the arena. Mr. Williams estimates the FIA package, including the clinics will cost the PPMHA nearly $1000 for two years, but he is very Kids getting a taste of the fundamentals positive about the pro- gram and feels the money is well spent. Mr. Edwards said the development of the pro- gram began about four years ago when Pat Stapleton was watching his own young boys at a practise. The FIA program has been adopted by all - minor hockey associa- tions in New Brunswick and many other com- munities on the east coast. It is now being in- troduced in Ontario and the western provinces, with thousands of youngsters getting ex- posure to it. Juniors in battle for top spot On February 27th, the Port Perry Sportsland Junior team travelled to Oakwood to play Mariposa. If we beat them we could make it to first place in our league but the results differed from what we wanted. It was a well played game by all. At the end-of the first period Mariposa scored 2 more making the end score 4-2 for them. Goals were scored by Heidi Meisner and both were assisted by Colleen Yorke. A good ef- fort was put forth by our goalie Terry Childs. Nice try girls!! - On Saturday March 2, the Sportsland Juniors met Mariposa again this time on home ice. The teams were very evenly matched and this became evident as the game remained scoreless until the ten minute mark of the first period when Mariposa finally found the mark. Early in the second period Mariposa scored two quick goals to go ahead three to nothing. This seemed to be the in- centive our girls needed as they rallied to score the next four goals. Kim Loudfoot scored from Sherry Harris at 11:44 followed by Colleen Yorke from Joanne Desautels at 8:22. Kim then put in the next two goals at 6:25 from Sherry UXBRIDGE MEMORIAL ~ FOR PERSONAL SERVICE VISIT OUR SHOWROOM HOME APPOINTMENTS & TRANSPORTATION BY REQUEST 38 YEARS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE COMPANY MEMORIALS OF DISTINCTION GRANITE - MARBLE BRONZE Cemetery Lettering & Renovations Custom Designing & Lettering Quality & Satisfaction Assured by our own Written Guarantee. 852-3472 108 BROCK ST. WEST and 2:17 from Vicki Reid. Unfortunately Mariposa got a break away and went in behind our defence to score the tying goal with 1:15 left in the game. Although we were able to keep the play in their end for the rest of the game we just couldn't beat their goalie. Jessica Fluke, Anne Finch "and Denise Tomkins played an ex- cellent game on defence managing to do the job usually done by five players. Heidi Meisner came back to play strongly after an injury early in the game and Terry Childs played a great game in goal mak- ing many fantastic saves. The team want to take this opportunity to thank Barry Beare for stepping in as defence coach dur- ing the Regionals and Marg and Jim for their usual great job. The credit for goals and assists in these write-ups are as per the game sheets as the ref sees them and as such the official stats. Even though there is some doubt at times to their veracity they do have to stand as written. The next game is Saturday, March 9th at 6:25 against Beaverton.
