20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 19, 1985 Sports With the series tied at a game apiece Ernestown came back to Port on Saturday March 9th and much to our dislike went home one game up. Ernestown opened the The Port Perry Bantams knocked off a tough Ernestown squad in the fifth and deciding game last week at the Scugog Arena. It was an uphill battle throughout the series for Port Perry and the game was not decided un- Now leading Bradford series two games to none scoring at the 12:11 mark of the first period but Port came back to even the score at one each on a goal by Mark Barkey assisted by Steven Connors. Port took the lead in the second period with a fine goal by Brad Men- zies assisted by Jeff Oke and held off Ernestown for the rest of the period. Period three belonged to Ernestown who scored three unanswered goals. Port became frustrated with many shots on net but no goals, final score 4-2 for Ernestown. Game four played in Ernestown was a barn burner with Port winning in overtime. Ernestown took an early two goal lead before Port got on board with goals by Brad Menzies assisted by Greg Stapleton and Brad Traves. In period two Ernestown scored early til late in the final period. (See story). The victory put Port Perry into the next playoff round against Brantford and the team has taken a 2-0 lead in that one after two games on the weekend. The Bantams have a good chance to wrap it up on home ice this Wednesday night with game time set for 8:00 p.m. Pee Wee B's sweep 3 The Stone Real Estate Pee Wee B's have finish- ed a successful mini- series against Uxbridge. The evetit was arranged by the coaches and managers of both tears. The champions to be established by the first team to win three games. The boys came out checking in the third period and were reward- ed with another goal by Adam Cummings assisted by linemates Ennis and Fitzgerald. Checking well for Port Perry were Aaron Cochrane, Ryan Free and Doug Adams. Mid- way through the third period Uxbridge finally got an unassisted goal by David Martin, but John Ennis responded for Port assisted by Cummings. Final score Port Perry 4, Uxbridge 1. The third and what proved to be the final game of the mini-series saw Phil Teno playing superbly on defense. Uxbridge, down two games, came out to win. Midway through the 2nd period the score was 40 for Uxbridge, Mien Port got the blades working with goals by Greg Fit- zgerald assisted by Mike Butt and Adam Cumm- ings and Troy McCullyassisted by Brett Puckrin. Going into the third period the Stone boys were down 4-2. Mike Butt called up to help in the absence of some team mates played well and scored the third goal assisted by Puckrin. Good checking effort by Scott Menzies and Cole Perry's back checking helped hold off the Ux- bridge team. The Stone Real Estater's continued to fly as Adam Cumm- ings scored unassisted and Greg Fitzgerald assisted by Kevin Mantel and Cummings com- pleted the scoring. David Talbot and David Bux- cey shared the goal ten- ding to help with the teams successful win - three games straight! ! then Port came back with two. The first goal by Jeff Oke assisted by Warren Geer and the se- cond goal unassisted by Jamie Menzies bringing the score to 3 all. The third period started badly for Port when Ernestown was two up on Port before Mark - Barkey scored his first on his way to a hat trick, assist to Jamie Menzies. Mark then scored his se- cond tying the game at 5 each, assist to Steven Connors. Mark playing very strong put Port ahead with only 1:33 left to play, assist to Greg Stapleton. Ernestown then put the pressure on and with only 18 seconds and a mental error by Port, they tied the game at 6 all. This brought on a 10 minute overtime period and Port proved to be the better scoring team. Jeff Oke scored early from a fine pass out from War- ren Geer. Mark Barkey then got his fourth goal assisted by Greg Stapleton and Andrew Steele. Port had to play very tough hockey and Ernestown could only score one goal. Final score 8 to 7 for the Goreski boys at Port. - This set the stage for a return match back in Port Perry on Wed. night. Ernestown showed they came to play and took a two goal lead. Mark Barkey unassisted, Bantams knock out Ernestown, finally! scored Port's only goal in period one. Try as they might, Port could not find the mark until Jeff Oke banged home a re- bound from Steven Con- nors. This tied up the game in the second period and that's the way it stayed until over halfway through the third period. At the 9:37 mark of the third period Brad Men- zies scored with assist going to Jeff Oke and Warren Geer. Ernestown came right back 10 seconds later with a goal. Oh, no, not overtime again! Port Perry had enough of the O.T. games and scored two unanswered goals. The first to break the tie by Andrew Steele assists to Mark Barkey and Greg Stapleton; the second or insurance goal by Jeff Oke .ssist to Brad Menzies : 1d War- ren Geer. Final score 5 to 3 for Port. This series was hard fought and Ernestown was a fine team and a pleasure to play and watch. Port Perry opened the series with Bradford Saturday and took the opener 7-5. In game two, the Port Bantams hand- ed Bradford a 4-2 loss and can put the series away with one more win. Next game is Wednesday evening at the Scugog Arena at 8:00 p.m. Petites tie Oshawa B On Saturday, March 16 the Bruton"s I.D.A. Petites hosted the Oshawa 'B' team in an exhibition game and tied them in a 3-3 score. It was a close-checking game throughout with the play going end to end. At the end of the first period it was 1-0 for Oshawa. In the second period it was 2-0 before Denna Lovering from Amy Parliament and Nicky Beare put us on the scoreboard. Misty Andrews from Amy and Jennifer Morden tied the game and we then took the lead on a goal by Denna from Nicky. Oshawa came back to tie the game. These are two evenly matched teams and this was a good game to see. All of the girls played well. On Sunday, March 17 the Bruton's I1.D.A. Petites travelled to Woodville where we finally beat this team by a score of 7-3. Port open- ed the scoring on a goal by Jennifer Morden assisted by Misty An- drews and Christine Mueller. Way to keep digging Jennifer! Wood- ville came back to tie the game three times before Port took the lead for good. Denna Lovering and Misty Andrews each scored a hat trick with assists going to Danielle Cooper 2; Kim Pop- pleton, Kelly Menzies and Kim Finley 1 each. Way to work girls! You all played well.
