How do you go about "finding that picture" At the Toronto Star, past issues are so well in- dexed it takes mere moments to look up a particular name, story, photo or ad. All you need to know is a person's name and the Toronto paper's filing system can FROM tell you how many times he or she appeared within its pages. At the Port Perry Star, there is virtually no in- dexing system and fin ding information about dated issues is next to impossible. But thanks to a Canada Works Grant and the in- dustry of three women, all that will change. In January the Port Perry Star, Scugog Memorial Library and Scugog Shores Museum Fly 'Wardair Class' to ANCOUVER all received microfilmed copies of the Star dating back to 1857 In February Celine Marcoux of Oshawa, Bonnie Guindon of Seagrave and Mary Jane Teer of Port Perry began the arduous task. of in- dexing all 63,000 pages of microfilmed papers. Everything is being cross-indexed according to subject, name and oc- cupation to make research easy. Type was tiny back in the earliest days of the paper and all three . women have been strain- ing their eyes reading each word and taking copious notes. As Celine Marcoux points out, "It wouldn't take us so long if we didn't file everything. But since we're doing it, we might as well do the best job we can." The grant, acquired by the library, will last un- til May 10th, by which time librarian Judy Mac- Coll is hoping to have somewhere close to the year 1900 indexed. "We may be revising that downwards because it's taking longer than we thought," she said. In the meantime, she's working hard at securing another grant to continue the work. And if everything goes accor- ding to plan, part of the index (1857 to 1890) could be released to the public = ---- iy hadi : rN hie J - » Ware \ Town - THY hi: @ wy PARRINg tn - FREES iy THE SPQp, «oN ™ New CL Oheap Gorge LoAY " L330) Bey N Aaa EH A Lary aya, x td 5 | A ty ve - . meme TI oC Ginger Pa. -- ~ « Se tTARtep uy CCl ) . an wee a "WAR ma.. wr nme vm Le 4 rie Aa RT " | BL. ale ow i. fi Sa SIS DL © en % a Sa 3 hag RR dh Thanks to the energy and. patience of three hard-working women, the microfilmed pages of the Port Perry Star will be indexed and cross-indexed for posterity.
